Review of Augusta-Richmond Coun,

Considering moving here
Star Rating - 12/8/2016
Hi all,
My husband and I are considering moving here to start our family and put down roots, but it seems like many people have negative things to say about it. Is it really all that bad? Maybe the people who come on to a site like this are those who have something to complain about...
We are wondering about the schools, the neighborhoods, employment for people with master's degrees and phds, and crime/functioning of the city. Any information you could give would be very helpful.

Yes, Augusta is as bad as it is described. I would not recommend moving there. However if you have to, Columbia County is pretty nice and has good schools. Avoid buying or renting anything in Augusta-Richmond County. It is very ghetto and the schools are subpar. The economy is not great in the Augusta area. However if you already have a good job lined up it is a cheap place to live. Housing prices are well below the national average. Overall the area is just very bland with not much to do, Shopping and restaurant choices are somewhat limited if you are looking for more upscale. Augusta does have plenty of wal marts and fast food places though. It does have a Costco and Sams Club. There is one shopping mall which is fairly nice but not with a lot of upscale stores. Also a lot of thugs hang out there in the evening. The local government is pretty corrupt and is very much run by a good-ole-boy network. There is a reason that the rest of the state refers to Augusta as Disgusta. Even though it has the Masters tournament, it is nearly impossible for any locals to get inside. So all it does is cause restaurants to raise their prices. Many locals leave during that week. The downtown is pretty underwhelming and looks very rundown with lots of abandoned boarded up buildings. Augusta would certainly not be on my lists of places to move to. THink about it, if there are so many negative comments about Augusta.. perhaps there is some truth to it.

Disgusta? That's silly. The only truth to that is that it rhymes with Augusta. The Masters is a really fun time of year. It's absolutely gorgeous that time of year in Augusta, although it's also a great time to put your house on AirBnB and have it pay for a vacation to the Bahamas! The housing in Augusta is SO much cheaper than national housing costs and Atlanta housing costs. I think the housing market is nearly 40% less than the national average. Anyway, I like Augusta... it's a really inexpensive place to live, has all of the daily amenities within minutes, and has virtually no traffic. Weekend trips to Atlanta, Charleston, Savannah, Hilton Head are easy (they're all less than 3 hours away).
