Shortage of year-round housing West Jefferson is a nice town with basic shopping facilities, family restaurants, library. But, the housing situation is a bit lacking. Most of the newer houses in the area lack a garage (in my opinion, required in this climate)due to the fact that so many of the homes are seasonal escapes for people who live in the hot and humid areas of NC and SC. In addition, many homes lack a central heating system and depend on electric baseboard heaters (economical when cheap TVA power was available here) or kerosene Monitor heaters. Houses built between 1975 and 1996 are very likely to have polybutylene plumbing and if you're unfamiliar with that you really need to research it on the Web. Housing prices are inflated by the nearby housing market of Boone/Blowing Rock. Year-round homes here are often lower priced and not well maintained. But, the pricing doesn't reflect that. Note that just about all newer homes are located in subdivisions with private streets - not maintained by the NC Dept. of Transportation. So, expect an expense of hundreds of dollars per year payable to an HOA, and sub-standard road conditions. West Jefferson is only 20 minutes or so from Boone, and retail stores and services you can't find in WJ are available there. Area recreation facilities are good, with fly fishing, kayaking, canoeing, hiking, bicycling nearby.
