Mackinaw City, MI

My Home Town the original "Big Mac" - 8/26/2008
Growing up in the northern most town in the lower penninsula of Michigan gave me an unusual perspective on the world at large. Most of the residents have some Native American blood but not many of them admitt to it or claim it. Most however, will tell you about Brittish, French or Scottish heritage.
Each Memorial Day weekend, most of the towns people participate in the Pagentry of the RE-enactment at Fort Michillamacinac. I myself started out as a english/french child and after a couple of years later I was choosen to be a Native American child. The events that take place over Memoorial weekend are spectular. There is always a wonderful parade that lasts (at least in the past) over an hour and has floats and bands from all over the state of Michigan and some from Canada. If you are looking for a family vacation on any holiday weekend (Memorial day, 4th of July or Labor Day) Mackinaw City rolls out the red carpet. It is one of the most improtant traditions that they have had since I was a child. The Labor Day events have visitors from all over the world that come to walk the "Big Mac." The Bridge is the longest suspension bridge in the world and is an incredible feat of egineering. To walk across it and look over the side at the waters of the Straits of Mackinaw is unbelievable. You can see Canada from the center. Mackinaw is truly one of the places of destination for your life list.
