10/1/2010Thank you for this. Yours and other comments about this problem (yes, I'm saying that religious influence with Govt/educational/biz issues is a problem. Locals who read this should be combating against the church(es) for the well being of your community.) have helped me to make an educated decision on relocating my family and business to the area.

I still believe the area itself is high in its potential to be a wonderful place to live, but the people have got to be willing to change. Abundant nature & wildlife. Good fishing & boating are all close by. Not a bad 25 minute drive to Gainesville (Home of UF "Gators").
That being said, the town population is a very high religious, republican, welfare town.... That's right, conventional wisdom is defied here.. The God and Guns vote trumps the political Republican agenda against so-called "socialism" here.. Yet, everyone has their food stamps. Which leads into my next statement; POOR education! Not totally the teachers fault, however, when you begin a science lesson to students (such as the process of evolution) with a disclaimer of, "this is not what 'I' believe", the system has issues. Combine a population with a largely hill-billy education, a church building of some type within every square mile, with a Good 'ol boy run govt., and you've got Interlachen, Fl.
