3/29/2007Payette County, Id., 50 miles West of Boise, has been a somewhat isolated communty. Everyone does know everyone else and if you like privacy this may not be the place for you. The area is experiencing rapid growth with the resulting problems of increase crime and rapidly rising home prices. Idaho does not license contractors so it is buyer be aware when purchasing or building a home. Though statistics show only 17% are LDS, the Mormon church has a strong influence on the community - which can be good with the focus on family. However, LDS folks, while outwardly friendly, most will be come friendly cool when they realize you are not interested in learning more about becoming LDS. If you are used to people speaking directly and saying what they mean, this small town my be frustrating; here people are remembred for how they were growing up, even if you moved and then returned years later. Fruitland is a great place if you want to return to the 50's, with the nostalgia but forget the drawbacks. Idaho taxes food, and the amount of coupons you use to get a lower price on anything ( I purchased a computer with a $150.00 off coupon and was taxed on the $150.00 in addition to the price of the computer. You will also have to take a drivers test, Idaho does not recognize other states drivers licenses. Payette is on the Or. border, so you can go to Oregon to make purchase, tax free, but the shopping is very limited.
