St. George, UT

The inflated housing prices, as in many places, have dropped significantly. When this post was originally written, they were incredibly inflated, on par with California prices.
We are in the middle of nowhere (2 hours from Vegas, 4 hours from Salt Lake) so food and goods have to be trucked in, and are more expensive than some other places.

re: random sample of ACTUAL July temps - 3/20/2011
- 6/19/2011
Jon, I wish those were the temperatures! Those temps were taken at the old airport, I'm guessing, which was high on a windy bluff. (A new one just opened.)
The reality is that it is 100+ for most days from (usually) through mid-September. The lows during that time period are never below 83. I'm saying it's still 99 degrees at 10pm. Yes, it's a dry heat, but it's still really, really hot and the lack of humidity (as low as 8%!!) makes it hard to even breathe some days.
Come visit. Experience the reality, and you'll see what I'm saying.
At least we've been lucky enough to have spring for the last couple of years. Usually we go from cool weather to extremely hot, with one week of nice weather in between.

Temecula, CA

re: Cheaper Housing Is Not Always Better. - 6/21/2

We lived in Temecula from 2002-2005. Back then it was a great place, Temecula's heyday. We have recently heard from friends and relatives still living there that the crime rate has increased, "tagging" is evident everywhere, and that the gangs have moved in. The police have formed task squads specifically to deal with the gang problems in Temecula and Murrieta. Makes me sad because Temecula is such a beautiful place. I hope the residents can get together and help save the city.
Some advice: If you plan to move there and commute to San Diego or up north, be realistic about the commute time. It's a killer.

St. George Utah Area
- 6/3/2007
We are originally from Southern California and moved to the St. George area about nine months ago for work-related reasons. What a shocker! The surrounding areas are gorgeous, with red rock galore. But the cities (St. George, Washingon, Santa Clara, Ivins, Hurricane, etc.) are fairly dismal. The majority of neighborhoods are run down, stores are old. The mall is tiny. We have a few chain restaurants, but very few others, although the fast food chains are heavily represented. (Take that as a hint as to the population.) Once you've used your annual pass to Zion National Park a dozen or so times, there's not much else to do here. Houses are extremely expensive, almost at California prices. Weather? Extremely hot from May through September. (We hit the 100s in MAY.) Pay? Seriously low, for the cost of living. I was shocked at the prices in the grocery stores. There is also a strong Mormon/LDS undercurrent here, which is somewhat unnerving to an outsider.
The plus side? Las Vegas is a 1.5 hour drive, and there's very little traffic here. Looking forward to going home. Soon.
