Genoa, NY

Summer Haven - 11/14/2009
In the Finger Lakes region of New York, Genoa is in the number one corn county in the state. As I have gotten older I have learned that our lack of sunshine is noticeable to many visitors. A heat wave here is 3 or more days above 90 degrees Fahrenheit. Some summers we never get a heat wave, other times we may even have a few days above 100. Spring and Fall foliage is beautiful, and there are a great number of summer vacationers on the lakes. Winters can get cold, but not compared to the midwest. We may have a few days below zero, and a cold snap of a few days in the single digits. But 20's and 30's are usual for winter. Snow tires are required, but ice is more of a driving problem than snow. Schools allow about 7-10 days annually for closing due to wind chill or winter storms. There is almost always a few inches on the ground in January and February. Begin planting carrots or cold-weather veggies in March or April, but it's common to have frost up to mid June, and to get frosts in early September.
