Pampa, TX

Pampa, not Tampa.

Pampa, not Tampa.

Culture and Recreation & Housing: I grew up in Pampa, but I've also lived in other places lately including North Carolina, Lubbock, and Canyon. To me Pampa is just the right size. I like to bike and this small town has a one-of-a-kind park system that is interconnected throughout town. Plus if you're up for making your own entertainment there are many parks of all sizes, some secluded, some on the beaten path, where you can recreate with the family and friends. There is little to do as far as nightlife, but the town is really quiet the housing prices are about 24% of the national average (very affordable) and there are many empty houses available. I feel this is a nice town for families, especially with younger kids who don’t seek a nightlife and is also great for retirees.

Education: I suspect that the school district is not as good as most, but if you White Deer is 15 miles away and is reported to have an excellent school district. In 2000 we opened a new 2 year community college that I think is great, very affordable and great teachers with small classes. We have a university just down the road about 70 miles (not much in Texas terms).

Climate: North Texas is not the prettiest place in most people’s opinion. We have a flat landscape and even wildfires sometimes due to the dead vegetation. But if you’re a fan of extreme weather we have it. Evening thunderstorms and tornado watches keep things exciting occasionally. You can see the storms develop for miles and miles.

Cost of Living: I believe the utilities and other household expenses are pretty average, slightly less than most. But like I said the housing is cheap and plentiful.

Crime: The stats say we’re a fairly crime ridden town, but I don’t see how. This town goes to sleep early. If you drive around late at night there’s nothing but empty streets and if you do so very long you will likely be pulled over and questioned by the cops. I believe there are a lot of drugs in this small town

Economy: Well the unemployment is lower than average, but most jobs are lower paying and service oriented in my estimation. And unfortunately, those in charge of economic development are not doing much to improve things.

Religion: We have a ton of churches of every denomination where the people are friendly and you’re always welcome.

Transportation: Like most places in Texas there is a high percentage of Trucks, but we have all kinds of vehicles here. I ev
