The County's Unemployment Rate vs Available Employ - 9/13/2009
I have lived and worked in Gassaway all of my life. Braxton County is a wonderful place to live but you must work away from here to prosper at all. There is no growth potential here. The locals are against change and progress. The main focus of the county seems to be tourism but I think that is a waste of time. The folks here can't live on seasonal pay. The only jobs available for most are minimum wage jobs and no one can support themself on that, let alone a family. I have heard my employer say, the unemployment rate is 8%, we should be getting better applicants. The people in Gassaway and Braxton County who are now unemployed are not the ones who would work the minimum wage jobs. They are laid off from other places, such as the mines or construction, and make more drawing unemployment or on welfare. I believe all who want a job have a job in our community. There are minimum wage jobs here but people are being forced to drive 30 minutes to an hour to find a better paying job doing the same type of work. I am personally looking out of the county for a better paying position.
Our community is a loving and friendly community but not economically sound. It hasn't been for as long as I can remember.
