Torrington, CT

Northwestern CT is beautiful; Torrington has great - 12/29/2015
Except for the winter (which I don't like anywhere), this region is beautiful. Torrington is an old mill town, so parts of it are definitely rough around the edges. On the other hand, it has the classic Warner Theater, a renowned ballet school, art galleries and a downtown that has retained much of its original architecture and historical signage. That said, the town needs more high tech manufacturing to add to its tax base, which draws much too heavily on already tax-burdened property owners. I understand the Yankee Pedlar Inn (a landmark hotel on Main Street) is undergoing a major renovation, which is heartening. At this point, it appears the little city of Torrington could take a significant turn for the better -- or worse. I encourage the city's leadership to sharpen its vision and redouble its efforts to revive this once thriving community. Presently, it's a diamond in the rough, and -- if you haven't seen it -- it's worth a look in large part because it happens to be situated in one of the country's most beautiful regions, which is quintessential New England. Torrington in its current economic condition, isn't for everyone, but it has a certain charm, great location and is a wonderful place to live, especially if you love outdoor activities involving boating, hiking, swimming and even skiing. Additionally, there are many beautiful and apparently more affluent communities (such as Litchfield, Goshen, Collinsville, Avon, Norfolk and West Hartford) all within an easy drive of Torrington.
