Richlands, NC
Been here a year now. -
4/1/2017Richlands gives you quiet country living, but allows you to still be just a stone's throw from Jacksonville. Living here is very affordable we live in a subdivision in a 3 bdrm 2 bath house built in 2009 with a large fenced in backyard for only$780 a month, which is very affordable on our low too moderate income, husband is a disabled veteran. The area is primarily military retired and active with camp lejuene being close, but my husband likes that, our street has mostly Marines. We see very little crime, drug activity, gangs, etc. The weather is pretty moderate, the humidity doesn't bother us very much, it rains a good amount so no fear of drought, it doesn't get that cold to us. Utilities are pretty reasonable except for cable. We can shop on base for cheaper groceries otherwise stores are not that far. We have lived in other states including Arizona and SC. and have found this area to have more pros than cons except for the VA, my husband hates it, but I don't think many areas have good VA's anymore.

Some good things -
4/1/2017My husband and I are older, he is a disabled veteran and we are retired on moderate to low income. We have lived in different areas including SC. Some pros of living in NC are moderate weather, we lived in Arizona for some time so the humidity is a welcome change & doesn't bother us that much. The are has tons of greenery, and drought isn't a concern as it rains a good amount. In Arizona the amount of homeless, and drug addicts seen regularly was very big, you don't find very many of those people here, life is slower paced, relaxed, areas safer, cleaner, etc. We live in Richlands a city right next to Jacksonville that is pretty quiet. The area has a very high amount of military people both active and retired, so if this is not your cup of tea, you would not like it here. Housing is very affordable here, we live in a 3 bedroom 2 bath built in 2009 with a big fenced in backyard and only pay $780 a month, other affordable housing that is not run down is easy to find here. The area is a little boring, but one thing we like to do is go to the beach with our dog, Onslow beach is located on camp lejuene and not too far of a drive maybe 45 minutes at most, we enjoy going there alot and so far it's never crowded. For us the affordability and other pros definitely outweigh the cons, so we will probably stay here a while.
Myrtle Beach, SC
Not for some. -
4/1/2017I think the city itself is fine, we didn't find a high amount of crime, druggies, etc. The area is just not affordable enough for my husband and me, who are retired but not wealthy. During the off season it is especially nice, as prices go down and there are alot less people. This area thrives on tourists, the economy is largely based off of it. I would recommend this place to those independently well off, or retirees who have high income- those who are well off financially will do better here because if you want work here you need to remember tourist city, some businesses close all together in the off season so there are less jobs and the jobs that are available are primarily service oriented to cater to tourists.
Tucson, AZ
Not a good place to live! -
4/1/2017I left Tucson and moved far away! If you have alot of money and can afford to live in the richer nicer homes on the North end of Tucson you will probably love it and do well, otherwise I would avoid this place like the plague. Some places are so ran down, you would think slum Lords own them, there are alot of places like that here. The city will not do anything, as there are no real laws to protect renters. The Tucson VA is crap, and attempting to find quality medical care elsewhere is equally as bad, again unless you have money. To say drug use is rampant is an understatement, and I am not talking about weed- which is legal here if you have a mmj card. I am talking about meth, heroin, crack, etc. There is an extremely large homeless population here the base of which is centered downtown around the library, homeless shelters are extremely over taxed and can't handle the numbers so they have homeless camps, alot of the people have mental issues combined with drug abuse.
