Weirton, WV

Employment Wanted! - 6/23/2007
O.k., Weirton has some problems but nothing that wouldn't be easily solved by bringing in a few good major employers! We have next to no crime, super low cost of living (nearly 20% LOWER than the rest of the country per Sperlings) and since we are less than 40 miles from Pittsburgh, PA, we can take advantage of all of their cultural and entertainment in less than an hour.

If you are reading this as an executive looking for a place to locate a manufacturing facility or other branch of your business, please seriously consider Weirton, West Virginia. We are within 20 minutes of the Pittsburgh International airport and have access to several major intersates within 20 minutes as well. The people of our area are hardworking, loyal and eager to find solid employment that will allow them to stay here.

We've lost brothers, sisters, cousins and former classmates to the southern regions as they have been forced to leave for employment. Notice I said "forced." A poll of former residents would probably reveal that a full 80% of them would have stayed if they could have found a job that would allow them to support their families. And no one is expecting to make hundreds of thousands of dollars - just a decent wage to afford a roof over our head, food on the table and some fun in our off hours.

Bring us jobs - we'll do the rest to make this the vibrant community it once was!

Pittsburgh, PA

Lousy place for SAD sufferers, but....
- 6/18/2007
...you can't beat the cost of living, variety of culture and general sense of well being in the Pittsburgh region. I suffer from SAD (Seasonal Affective Disorder) and desperately need sunshine to feel normal. Needless to say, this is a tough place to find that from November through April. Summer is great here. I was considering a move to Florida but have decided I'll buy a good full spectrum light and up my meds in the winter because I cannot see putting my family in that kind of environment just so I can feel happier. Head over to the Orlando City View section of Sperling's and read about all the people who are miserable there. Compare crime rates, cost of living and wages and you'll be as convinced as I am that Pittsburgh is as close to Utopia as you can get these days.

I live just across the state line in Weirton, West Virginia (where it's dirt cheap to live, by the way) and have commuted to jobs in downtown Pittsburgh. It takes less than an hour to cover the 38 miles from my house to downtown burgh. Not too shabby. Still I think I'll look into moving into PA and closer to the Pittsburgh proper to take more advantage of the quality of life afforded in the city. I'll save up my money and splurge on a Florida vacation every February. As you've heard it's a great place to visit. :-)
