Big fish in a little pond syndrome -
6/14/2018Hanover/Lyme is where people from MA and NY and other states move so they can be big fish in little ponds. For the area, Hanover is a nice town but there are many such towns around Boston, NYC, and so on. There is very little shopping unless you want expensive, locally sourced products sold at the funky COOP. They have a few streets with all the things a college town needs but after awhile of paying the costs (jacked up!) this town gets old and boring. The library is very good especially for the area and there are some nice people but overall the whole Upper Valley is a mix of out of state hipsters trying to be big fish in the pond because they failed in their home states. They bring lefty ideas that clash with the locals in other more humble towns.

re: Horrible Weather Year Round -
6/14/2018We used to drive an hour north before we saw the sun most days in Albany! The husband and I used to say a cloud hangs over that area. Also very miserable people. I've always made friends all over the world but no one ever spoke to me there socially! Weird, weird place that should not be NY capital.

Life has to be better than this for the regular pe -
2/11/2016Life is just too difficult here for the regular person, particularly if you come from any other state. I have no idea why they claim the unemployment rate is so low when there are very few jobs and even less GOOD paying positions, unless there is a hidden backdoor to employment. If you work in health care, maybe you will be okay, but the tradeoffs are just not worth it. Shopping is subpar at best in Lebanon/West Lebanon and the cost of groceries is higher than half an hour south of here in Claremont. Customer Service is non existent and there is a huge hillbilly vibe where drinking, drugging, and smoking are not only acceptable, but you won't fit in unless you do one or more of those activities. Drug crime is high for such a small population and most young people move away to pursue better economic opportunities if they can. It is very common for people to be in trouble repeatedly with the law. Going to the courthouse is not a shock for them! Also if you want just a normal life (okay apartment, gym membership) you will find yourself financially locked out because these things are quite expensive here.
