White River Junction, VT

Great place to be an unemployed stoner or on disab - 2/1/2010
WRJ is a void just like Lebanon. Simply put, if you want to live near NOTHING and pay just for the luxury of living 'near' a road in Hanover, NH because "Dartmouth" is there, please come here.

#1--There aren't any jobs here.
#2--You see the weirdest people walking around. Half the people in WRJ are either unemployed or stoners or both.
#3--Hang near the Courthouse downtown and see those who are down and out.

There is very little to do here. Drugs are 'all over' and you can look at the mountains and count your pennies.

The recession has hit this place hard. The few jobs in the Upper Valley are non-existent. People will tell you to be glad you work in a supermarket with a degree.

Prices are high thanks to Dartmouth/Dartmouth and the students/professors/medical staff.

What do you get for such high rents/house prices?

Nothing.

Bay Shore, NY

Bring your money and know the area well!
- 4/11/2006
I have lived in Bay Shore on and off in my 40 years. I only came back here because of family and needing a place to stay when my husband, son and I returned from out of the area.
Long Island was once the dream place of every resident of New York City. Now it's dirty, overcrowded, and really horrible. There are good points about Long Island but you must have money, and I mean A LOT of money to do well here and enjoy life.
Houses here range on average about $300,000 or more (plus high, high taxes) for nothing special. There are hardly any legal apartments. In fact, illegal apartments on Long Island are discouraged but many people have them in their homes to help pay the enormous mortgages.
BayShore has a mixed culture which has gone from mostly White people (still in some parts of the town) to many more African Americans and a large Latino community.
In parts of Bay Shore crime is terrible. If you move here, stay away from Downtown at night.

Orlando, FL

Luis makes great points about the dream of Florida

So many people are leaving the NE to go to Florida. Half of NY wants to move to sunny and fun Florida! I don't see why (my brother lives near Orlando) and I would NEVER move there. My nephew and niece both went to a BAD school district and had to take a bus for a long time to get there. The schools are terrible. My father said he never saw my nephew (never a scholar, but still) with a book in his hands or homework. People with children SHOULD not move to Orlando or other 'bad' parts of Florida unless you can afford private schools. Thanks for your post, Luis. It's very true.

We are probably moving from NY to WI as soon as we hook up jobs. I would love to know more (the truth!) about the Fox Cities area. Basically we are simple folks seeking good schools and an area with low crime.

New York, NY

Do not move to Long Island, NY unless you are weal

The crime is low (supposedly) in the Long Island area but no one tells outsiders that you better avoid certain areas if you want to be safe. Long Island is very segregated! There are certain towns only minorities can comfortably live in. Also, if you are a minority, you will find it hard to get into some places. (it's a subtle type of discrimination).

People here are extremely vacuous and materialistic. I am sorry to say this, having lived here almost my whole life, but I can't wait to move and get away from it. I think the reason so many people are materialistic is because costs are so high and 2 people MUST work in a family to 'get by' in the cheapest places. Be prepared to pay a lot for just a no big deal house (over $300,000). 50% of the young people/older people want to leave.
