New Orleans, LA

Don't be lost in Nostalgia - 12/25/2010
I was born and raised in New Orleans and I never understood why some people loved it enough to die for it. Hurricanes Katrina was predicted long before it happened. New Orleans has always been ridden with poverty, poor education, HIGH crime and high unemployment due to lack of industry other than tourism and we all new it. Even though I grew up enjoying Mardi Grads and other festivals, I've always had a since of fear and lacking as a child due to it's enviroment. I haven't found a place with friendlier people 20 years later but I am happy that I left in 1990s. A friend I grew up with regrets that she never left to see and experience other places that are better. New Orleans is to me is like a Capitalistic spider Webb that trapped many people in to be eaten alive. My family lives elsewhere so I have no reason to visit. I can still attend Jazz festivals, meet friendly people, and eat craw fish in many other places in the world. What kills me is that some are still moving back..including my mother! WOW

Iam going to move back to minnesota and live the good life, get a good job, keep my daughter in its superb schools, and maybe become a republican while being liberal enough to marry outsirde of my race or american culuture. Only if he has his citizenship though. I AM SERIOUS.. Life is too short to keep complaining and being disatisfied. Besides, this is truely one of the best cities thats left in the US.

My mother is 62 and also says the same thing. She lives in Dallas. I am not sure if it's just an aging thing or maybe because the weather is so dry and hot.

All places has it's drawbacks but as a Southerner I can say that people are more polite in St. Paul than honest and open; if that's what you prefer then you'll fit in. If you are an interacial couple your perception and experiences may be different here because you are very fashionable. So you're good in MN :) Situation Is deeper than some are willing to admit.

I 've been here four years now and most people I've met never get used to the winters. It seems to get worse every year. I am also a single parent and I just don't like nor trust the people, no lie. Minnesotans are going to get definsive but they are a bit sheltered. Fake nice ... Yes, it's diverse but segragated as most of the cities in the US. Healthcare is good and there are alot of activities for children.(that's what kept me here) The single life is very borig and lonely especially if you are a woman of color moving here with out family. No lie. NO one else can relate. If you are looking for a place you can call home, this is not it. I am going to move some where with warmer weather and people. Oh, and if you are a renter, watch out for slumlords. 80% of minneapolis landlords are. (it was in the startribune newspaper a few months ago) email me and I can tell you more.

Move to Richmond or deal with frigid Minnesota? - 3/22/2009
I am considering moving to Richmond but I wondering about the job market there?? Also, I am considering going back to college. Does anyone have any good recommendations? I live in Minnesota and the weather here has gotten unbearable for me.

I've also been living in a the twin cities for about 4 years. The lack of sun and social climate makes me feel less motivated to do anything but stay warm most of the year. It's work feeling happy. I am considering Richmond, Va. I can't handle any type of extreme climate. I was sent a Richmond housing listing but I am uncertain about the economy there. I have heard that Texas has been labeled as a recession proof state? Let me know wht u think:)
