Libby, MT | 1 Review(s)

I'm a writer and journalist and former professor of creative writing at several U.S. colleges and universities, as well as visiting faculty in central, western Europe and Middle East. I moved to northwest Montana 14 years ago, moved into my small log home on one acre and settled down to a life of writing, with occasional travel to cities in the U.S. and abroad. I live alone with my dog, Shadow.

Far from the Madding Crowd - 8/8/2009
Libby is backed by a huge wilderness area that has gizzly bears, moose, elk, and all sorts of other wild creatures. North of the town of about 2500 where I live, I'm also close to grizzly bear habitat, and deer roam around on the properties -- until hunting season when you don't see many for that time. For those who like winter sports, there is a ski lift (chair lift) 10 miles farther long the two lane road. There are unlimited areas in the mountains for skidoos, and 4-wheelers go on the trails and Forest Service roads in summer and fall. Great hiking, fine fishing in streams, mountain lakes, and on the Kootenai River than runs from a large damabout 20 mioles north, through the city, and west into Idaho.

It's a great place to write, which is what I do. Or start your own radio station, which some of us did. I have my own show once a week -- a classic jazz show with commentary, since I once was in the business. I arranged to write a regular column for one of the newspapers in town. When I lived in NYC or out of Washington, D.C., there certainly was no opportu nity for that kind of activity.

Very little serious crime, a mild climate, with snow and only occasionally below zero temperatures. In summer, a few hot days a year. It's a place where you can still buy a small house for about $50,000, or a palace at $250,000 to $400,000. Those larger prices will get you a four bedroom home, three baths, fireplace, enormous kitchen, study, family room, living and dining rooms, and anywhere from three to 10 acres, with professional landscaping to your specs.
