Winfield, AL

What is wrong with Winfield? - 2/15/2018
Having lived in this town for a few years, I have to concur with Debbie above. This truly is a weird town. If you’re thinking of moving here, think again. If you really think you should move here, rent for a year and then decide.

Living here is like living in the Twilight Zone. In fact it would make a good Twilight Zone Episode. No one will talk to you. In fact, in the many years I’ve lived here, I’ve yet to make one single female friend. About the only people who talk to me are retail clerks and waitresses. And that’s probably because they’re paid to.

If you’re attending church three times a week (and what a joke that is “Christians” uh huh) or interested in the “game”, this is not the place for you, as I sadly found out. I just regret spending as much time and money in this town as I have. Time and money I’ll never get back.

Southern hospitality is a myth. That died with the Civil War. I had some prescriptions filled a few years ago at a local pharmacy. Not only did I get the freeze out as I had the audacity to walk in unannounced, the cashier rolled her eyes when I paid for my prescription. She was very rude and cold to me. For no apparent reason.

A few months later we met a gentleman from Texas (a transplant himself) and he experienced the same treatment at that same pharmacy. And that’s really a shame, as he’s a decent human being and would probably give you the shirt off of his back if you needed it. He’s never spent one dime there since. He’s been treated very poorly by the populace at large. He’s now become quite the hermit and is planning on leaving this area for good.

We attended a public event advertised in the newspaper. Same thing. Complete freeze out. It was the most uncanny thing I’ve ever encountered. The only person who spoke to us was a little kid, who received a dirty glare from her parents by being nice to the “outsiders”.

This is truly a very lonely place if you don’t know anyone when you move here. I’d feel very sorry for someone who was stuck here and couldn’t afford to leave. It would literally be hell on earth.

All I can say is that if you’re thinking of moving here, just keep on driving past the exit on I-22. You’ll save yourself much time, money, energy and grief.
