Dickinson, MI

Come on vacation, leave on probation - 3/2/2018
It's a nice place to visit, but I would not want to die there. I lived there between 1975 - 1983 and moved out within a week of graduating from college.

It has no local economy to speak of other than logging and tourism. Jobs requiring a college degree are far and few in between. You have to leave there to get a college degree (I went to Houghton) and since you're gone if you're smart you'll stay gone.

I visit there because I still have family there. For the love of God I can't figure out why. It does have beautiful scenery and outdoor activities but not much else.

My wife will only go there in the summer time. She doesn't care for the winter weather.

It has a hospital called DCH (Dickinson County Hospital) but the locals say the initials stand for "Don't Come Here"

I prefer Detroit over Dickinson County. What does that tell you?

SCS is slowly going down hill. - 3/2/2018
I have lived in SCS since 2002. In that time SCS is slowly doing down hill. SCS have three school districts and for a city of its size that's two too many. The southern school district (South Lake) is turning into Harper Woods North.

On the block that I live, it used to have families with small children and most of them are now gone. Houses are selling and new people moving in but no kids. Hopefully a new family cycle will start in a few years.

SCS is on the far eastern edge of the Detroit metro area near to major freeways (I-94 and I-696) which makes getting somewhere nice. SCS is a bedroom town with not much to do in it. You have to go elsewhere for entertainment.
