East Northport, NY

A good place...if money is no object. - 7/22/2017
It's no secret that Long Island boasts some of the highest taxes in the nation. Not just property taxes but all taxes. Utilities are also 50%-100% more than other places. For that you'll get good schools, nice beaches, winter sports to the north and the greatest city in the world just 1hr away. You'll also get the full "four seasons", an abundance of amazing drinking water and the best medical care available. But if you're not making enough money to enjoy the city, skiing and the beaches, then everything else can probably be found elsewhere w/o the high taxes. As for jobs; being near the city means good job opportunity...if you're willing to sit on a train for 3-4hrs/day. And be advised; the Long Island Rail Road sucks. More conventional jobs, like sales and customer service, do NOT pay more on Long Island or in NY, so consider that. Long Island is also very segregated. Some may like that, others may not. But it does mean that there are pockets of "bad" areas on Long Island and growing gang violence has become an issue. There is a nice 'community feel' in East Northport, though I cannot speak for the rest of the island. A need-nothing home in East Northport will cost $400k+, a fixer-upper will cost low-to-mid $300's. Homes in this area do hold their value and most people take good care of their homes. Overall a nice place to raise a family...if you can afford it. But for retirement, look elsewhere.
