Native American Burial grounds - 3/1/2008
Along River road where sixty Islands boat landing is located are 120-acres of land owned by the State of Michigan. This land and land adjacent to it now owned by the Mancheski family has over a dozen burial mounds, numerous garden areas, dance rings and village sites. Having been occupied for over 3500-years this land hold priceless history. In 1950 3-mounds were excavated and these results became to know as the “Backlund” papers. This was named after the owner. Paul Backlund for the property now owned by the State of Michigan and the Mancheski family. In 2007 Native American antiquities council petitioned the Department of Interior to name this property a national historical treasure. This would create an area of approximately 250-acres that would be put into the trust fund for Native Americans.
