Mena, AR

Horrible, hateful little place - 8/31/2007
I lived in Mena for 15 years while my kids attended school here. I hated every minute of it. We moved to this town thinking it was a safe place for the kids but it was quite the opposite. For kids, there are after school activities with the school (i.e. band, sports, etc.) but that's it. A very small percentage of the students were involved in these activities while the rest went home and got into trouble. There is a high percentage of juvenile delinquency as well as drug use among the 15-25 year old age group. The kids are so desperate and bored, they screw around - and I mean this literally, there is a high percentage of teen pregnancy and nearly half of the girls graduating from high school are married within a few years. People reading this will probably argue, most of those kids don't have a strong family life or Christ in their life. B.S., folks. Despite the high divorce rate, most kids are involved in some church activities but again, this is just a mask for dirty little secrets. People are very hypocritical in this town and will smile at you and quickly, turn around and gossip about you. If you move here, watch yourself and don't get close to anyone. TAlso, a large percentage of the population is over 65, meaning Mena is a retirement community. There are few families with young children because most of them skip town soon after they get bored. he only plus side of this town is the outdoors. If you love mountains and open spaces, this is the place...just make sure you watch out for the tucked away meth labs in the boonies.
