Charlton, MA

In love with this place - 6/13/2012
Charlton. A place in Massachusetts that is used as a "connector" town to get from Springfield to Rhode Island. Or Worcester to Oxford. But the things that people miss as they drive through... are amazing. I am 14 and live here with my mom, dad, and brother. The people are friendly, and the neighborhoods are close, but not too close, so it is a cozy safe place to have a home. Lets start with the weather. Winters here are, as some would say, "brutal". January-February the temperatures run from single digits to low 40's. March has a MUCH more drastic difference. The temps. can be Mid 30's to low 60's. On rare occasions, like March of 2012, the temperature almost reached 80 degrees on some days, while low 50's on other days. April, the temperatures are somewhere from high 50's to high 60's, but can also reach 80 every now and then, but not often at all. May is my favorite month. Temps are basically high 60's to high 70's and low 80's. June-August are much warmer with temps. reaching above 70 every day, and late July-Mid August the temp can easily soar above 80 into the 90's. (Summer 2011 had temperatures reach into the 100's but that was extremely rare). September has temps in the 80's to 70's. October, however is very drastic. Last October (2011) temperatures got low enough (High 30's to low 40's) for snow to fall. Over a foot had fallen, toppling trees with their leaves still on them causing power outages and school-shutdowns for days. November is the most boring with no leaves on trees, and sometimes no snow at all, so you have a bare brown landscape with 40's and 30's as temperatures. December is 30's to 10's. (But Teen's like 15 or 18 degrees are much more common in the mornings, not in the middle of the day). Summers are gorgeous here. However, thunderstorms yielding hail and wind are common, especially in July. Last summer (2011) there was an EF3 tornado which spawned from a monster thunderstorm running from Springfield to Sturbridge, not hitting Charlton. 3 people died and 200 were injured. But don't let that turn you away from Charlton, or even Massachusetts. Anywhere you go, even Alaska, has had a tornado, and if tornadoes are not very prominent, there are other dangers such as Hurricanes or Dust Storms. Last summer, Tropical Storm Irene made a direct hit at New York City, and hit us too, as the Hurricane was half the size of the US. No deaths that I am aware of happened anywhere near Charlton. However, Summers in Massachusetts have a lush, misty, sweet smelling feeling to them, and I love them. If you are looking for an interesting climate, love storms, love snow, and love CHANGE, consider living here. There is much more than what meets the eye, and you will love it, guaranteed.
