Prescott, AZ

My only "contribution" is that fall seems to be the best time of year in every state. I've lived in the Mid-Atlantic states area, the northeast, upper midwest, and coastal southwest. Fall is best, though, in the dryer areas, spring can be pretty nice. It's like fall without falling leaves and dying vegetation.

Santee, CA

Almost Perfect - 12/3/2012
I have lived in Santee for 36 years and the changes have been extensive. Traffic has been, and still is, a big problem. However, that's a problem in most CA towns and cities. Santee is on the eastern border of San Diego, which is pretty much where the jobs are.
That said, Santee is a great little community. Other than having no hospital, it is well-run, and almost self-contained, especially if you don't mind shopping at fairly low-end stores. I don't mind at all. The people are friendly, the layout is very convenient (Costco, Walmart, Home Depot, Office Depot, Michaels) all in a loop. And across the street from the loop is Town Center with many other stores (Bed Bath & Beyond, Target, Staples). You get the point.
Only two real negatives. It's in California which is close to communist, and very expensive, and second, Santee is very hot and dry. If I had my way, I'd lift Santee out of CA and move it to, say, Idaho, far from the leftist loons running our state.

Wow! sign me up! Actually, you've said what I've been saying for 34 of the 35 years I've lived in the San Diego area, and WE'RE CONSERVATIVE (relatively). Great review.

re: Boise, and Southern Idaho Culture - 2/5/2011

After living in the Bosnia-Hertzagovina of state - California, I would welcome the homogeneity of Boise. Additionally, this place is more like Sodom and Gomorrah. I have been to Boise and found it to be a great place, though I thought the summer was pretty hot and dry, similar to my current abode. The people were great, the city was very clean, and then there's the Broncos! What a run the football team has had for several years. I guess we can only hope that not too many "normal" lefty Californians don't move to Idaho and wreck the place as they have in Colorado. What's that term? Californication. So appropriate.

It's obvious that you are a snooty liberal, and it's great to hear you'll be leaving. God (oops, did I say that?) help the place you land. San Fran would be a good choice.
I've lived in Santee for over 30 years, and in the early years, Klantee may have been an appropriate moniker. But no more. Sure, it's pretty white (if you include the 19% Hispanic population as white), but it isn't any more racist than, say, Hillcrest. There are several decent places to eat, and middle of the road shopping. And we can't forget our "discount loop" (Walmart, Costco, Home Depot, Office Depot, etc) which can be very convenient.
The real problems are traffic congestion and hot summers. The traffic engineers should be fired for incompetence. And we must just live with the climate.
Population hasn't really grown too much in the last 5 years, and that's a good thing.
Overall, Santee is a bedroom community - safe, quiet, and rather peaceful.

Billings, MT

Numero Uno so far
- 9/17/2006
I spent 4 days in Billings a couple years ago, which doesn't make me an expert on the place, but I really enjoyed the visit. I found the city to be "comfortable" and the people with whom I interacted were wonderful - very friendly and outgoing. Of course, I dealt primarily with retail clerks, waitresses, etc., and not "neighbors", and I wasn't looking for employment so my experience is rather stilted. I guess my only bug would be it isolation. We often hear of "cabin fever" particularly in relation to living in a place like Hawaii. But my wife, who shares my overall opinion of Billings, really felt isolated. Face it, the next "big" town is Bozeman, 137 miles away. I've visited many wonderful cities, and for me, Billings is Numero Uno. I could move there without much hesitation.

Crime - Sergeant Alan

So, is the crime index on this site or elsewhere? And are you referring to the City, County, or outlying areas? This would be really useful info. I live on the border of a large city with relatively high crime, but little or none in our little city. Thanks, to all who post opinions.

Outrageous taxes - for What?
- 5/28/2006
I met my wife in 1967 in Milwaukee while stationed with the Navy at Great Lakes, Ill. After leaving the service, I lived in Milwaukee for six years in the early 70's. I moved to the San Diego area in 1976, but have kept track of the place ever since departing. The taxes, particularly the property taxes for the city, county, and state are so outrageous that any positives are quickly overridden. My property taxes for the 73-74 year rose an incredible 50%! The governments at the city and county level seem corrupt, a shadow of Chicago. The pension system is broken and drags the area down. Even the people aren't particularly friendly, as they seemed in the late 60's. (Maybe I've just been going to the wrong places). It's probably all related. The folks feel trapped, with no where to turn. And at least Milwaukee County is mostly liberal/Democratic, and we know how much fun that bunch can be!
The list has no end, so I better stop. Milwaukee is on the slide, and it's a pity.

For the folks considering moving to Boise/Nampa; I believe there are problems with crime and gang activity in Nampa. I'd suggest you bookmark the Idaho-Statesman newspaper site, or one of the local news stations to get a feel for the area, and Idaho.

Boise City, ID

A really nice place
- 11/17/2005
I have visited many cities to get a feel for what they'd be like to live in. Boise currently leads the pack. During the brief period spent in Boise, I found it to be a very nice, clean, polite city. People yielded when exiting businesses, the streets were incredibly clean, and there didn't seem be to a "slum" part in downtown Boise.
