Daytona Beach, FL

Bad and getting worse - 8/4/2019
The area has attracted the worst of the worst from around the nation. People seem to move here with the fantasy that they will not have to work (even if they get jobs, they don’t seem to be willing to work—never seen anything like it). When a town operates on special events for rednecks, you know what you get. Crime is much worse and neighborhoods are getting really rundown. Would never suggest this town as a place to move.

Was once a very desirable place to live - 8/4/2019
If you want a fairly affordable place to live near or by the beach, this is it. It used to be quieter, though. Too much development and the Daytona events are moving up this way. Tomoka State Park is right here and then there is the lovely “Loop” and other parks with historic structures (remnants of old sugar mills). We live in a community built in the 70s. People have done a good job redoing the houses...no cookie cutters. But people are generally not friendly. Very “red” area.
The Main Street/downtown Ormond area is historic and cute and offers a number of independently owned restaurants. There are regular “art walks,” new little shops and restaurants popping up here and there.
The beach is gorgeous on this part of the Atlantic coast.
My problem with the area is that people have found out about it and it is being overdeveloped and wildlife is being chased out. Traffic is getting MUCH worse and crime has increased. We are going to leave.

Rotten place to live

Overdevelopment is certainly hurting Ormond Beach and traffic is worse than ever, but there are very cool houses dating back to the 1800s in the historic area, a few 1960s and 1970s neighborhoods where you won’t find cookie cutter housing but instead wonderfully renovated homes, and some gated communities. There are some independently owned restaurants in the older “downtown” area (Grind, FIG, Restaurant 31, Hull’s, etc.) as well as on the beachside (Lulu’s) where there is also a great gourmet foods shop and a new Lucky’s Market, which is fantastic. There is also La’s on Nova (in addition to others) in addition to The River Grille on the river. Downtown has scheduled art walks every so often...wine and cheese events, and the Ormond Art Museum and Gardens is a really nice little museum (MOAS is right down the road). Yes, the area is missing live music, and if you want to see plays, you do have to go elsewhere.
But the beaches are some of the most beautiful along the east coast of Florida.
As for the rednecks, we have noticed that are moving up this way from Daytona, so I can’t argue with that.
As with many places, Ormond is a mixed bag, but, honestly, I think it’s the nicest town near/on the ocean (have you visited The Loop?!) and, outside of DeLand, one of the nicest in the county.
