I'm looking for a place to move in a few short months. The world is my oyster--except I have to buy at less than $100K. If I had my druthers, I'd live in a down-townish/artsy/eclectic kind of area within walking distance for an old lady of some local neighborhood shops & cafes. Does that sort of thing still exist in this era of big box stores? Or is it only for the well-heeled? I have multiple animals, and they are family, so my future home has to accommodate them. Single story...small yard. Easy for an old person starting over.

Toledo, OH

The absolute Pits

I am very sad to hear this, since I am considering a move to Toledo. It seems to have the most centrally located zoo, museum, aquarium, and botanical garden. I keep hearing about the rejuvenation of downtown. Chicago's downtown became blighted decades ago and then enjoyed a comeback. Is it possible those things are happening now? And did you manage to get out? I'm hoping I can find pockets of creative people working to make a difference in Toledo.

boring, boring, boring, especially if you - 5/28/2020
It's 13 years later. Where did you relocate? THank you for your honest assessment, Lisa. I am looking for an affordable place to retire, and I know the surroundings are quite beautiful near Carbondale. But it sounds like there is no culture to speak of, that is, no arts community. For someone of limited means and mobility, not a best choice. I've found that communities with those things often have a higher crime rate, but choosing a good neighborhood can make a huge difference.

STINKY DIRTY PUEBLO

Thank you for the extensive review. I am scouting the country for places cheap enough for me to retire and still own my own home. Daunting. From weeks of research, I am seeing that any place cheap enough is usually a depressed area economically with high crime. I have not found an exception yet. I may still settle in Pueblo, and it sounds in keeping with the other cities I've reviewed. Can you recommend any parts of town as better than any others if you are looking in the <$100K vicinity? Or are meth houses a standard neighborhood fixture? I'd like to be near the zoo or any existing art district.
