Fayetteville, AR

re: ONE OF THE BEST PLACES IN THE WORLD TO LIVE!!!
- 1/3/2013
I have a few questions about Fayetteville. Do they enforce noise ordinances which prevent excess motorcycle noise, dogs barking all night long, etc. Is it a safe place to live in terms of traffic fatalities as well as misc factors such as crime. Are there lots of healthy choices for grocery shopping (Whole Foods, etc). Is it easy for adults to make new friends there. Are the highways and roads well planned, marked and curbed. Are there lots of boutiquish shops and sidewalk cafes all over the city. Is everyone within a 10 minute walk of a park of some kind even if it is a small one. Are there lots of used book stores and book clubs? Are people there interested in exercise, health, reading, learning and discussing abstract ideas with others in the community that may not be relatives.

Is there a train you can take to Boston and how is it in terms of safety, comfort, time, reliability, expense, etc.

Low crime, close to the ocean, 2 hour drive to Boston for a weekend in the city at Hotwire discounted hotel rates, short drive to NB or Nova Scotia. I could see living there. I currently live in the other Portland, on the left coast. I like it too, but your lower crime rates are enticing. I have a few questions. Do the biting black flies and mosquitos make it unpleasant to be outdoors in the forest? How is traffic safety there? Maine state-wide traffic fatality stats seem not quite up to par. Some complain about the cost of groceries and such, yet you have a walmart supercenter 14 miles away. Do any of you go there weekly to buy your stuff? Most importantly, is it really difficult for 50 somethings to move there from far away and make friends?

Since he has lived in all of them, maybe he thinks they are all bad. Otherwise why would he move so much.

You may want to dig a little deeper, as relocation is a major decision. Sperlings allows you to zoom out to the metro area. Doing so gives crime rates of 4,5 for portland and 3,3 for santa fe. A really in depth examination reveals that the ratio of portlands daytime population to nighttime is much higher than santa fe's. That tends to distort crime stats. If crime is really a major issue, why not consider some of the low crime portland suburbs, like sherwood or even newberg?

To clarify my other post, one thing that interests me about your metro area is its low crime rate and the related demographic data. How is the quality of older homes in the area? Do they hold up well. What about mosquitos and bugs in general. Do the cold winters freeze them out or do they somehow appear in mass during the summer? Is it easy for newcomers to make friends there? Do a lot of people move in from other parts of the country? Are there lots of used book stores and reading groups? What about arts and crafts groups for adults?

#1 in suicide - interesting. The article (and my other research) indicates number 12 out of major US cities. Do you have a source for your data?

Very much like Portland - interesting. According to Sperlings, Portland has average Jan low temp of 36.6 F. Portland's summers are very dry and arid, with an avg july high of 79.3 F. I must admit I have never been to Minneapolis but am surprised to hear that it is so much like my city. People here are not very clannish or cliquish. Is it that way in Minneapolis? I am just interested in finding out how the two cities are so similar. I have always been interested in the twin cities, having seen Fargo about 6 times, but have never been close enough to them to have occasion to go there. I would certainly think the twins would be preferable over the Old South, which I dont care for. The Mall sounds interesting. I prefer enclosed malls over shopping villages. For one thing you get more of a social experience out of going to a real mall. I remember my hometown city opened one in about 1960 and it had an almost lifesized chess set out in the middle for anyone to use. At least it seemed almost life sized to me, because I was a little kid at the time.

Portland is an all around great city - 3/23/2009
Downtown Portland is so pleasant that many thousands of people choose to live there even tho they could easily afford a nice house in a premium suburb. Lots of outdoor cafes and culture of all sorts - the Saturday market offers a rich blend of culture and music, as does Pioneer Square, the Alphabet District, the Pearl District, and many other areas. Portland is within a very short drive to the Oregon Coast, Mount Hood and Rainier, the Columbia River Gorge, rainforests, deserts, and many other spectacular attractions. People here read more books than in most places. The area has many used and new bookstores, including the worlds largest. Portland is not very cliquish and not at all clannish, so it is more open to new people than many areas. People here love outdoor adventures and there are many opportunities for them. In the summer the city abounds with roses and has the worlds greatest rose garden. It is the best all around city in America, and I should know because I have lived all over and have spent time in almost every major US city (Houston and Sacramento not included).
