Augusta, GA

re: Good economy and quality of life - 12/30/2009

Augusta is a hell hole. Job growth? Oh I guess I missed another Wal-mart opening. The place stinks (literally). The downtown is one boarded up building after another, aggressive pan handlers, and winos urinating in alleys. As far as nightlife, well let's just say it makes a frat keg party seem sophisticated. Food? A waffle House and McDonalds on just about every other corner pretty much sums it up. If you actually think Augusta is a nice place to live then you obviously have not been to many places.

This is a City??
- 6/1/2006
Nothing about Sandy Springs resembles a city. There is no downtown, no main street, no signature civic buildings, and hardly any sidewalks. Sandy Springs for all intents and purposes is nothing but suburban sprawl. Atleast neighboring Roswell, another north Atlanta suburb, does at least have an historic town center. Sandy Springs' center, if you can even identify a center, is a garish stretch of Roswell Rd lined with fast food joints and indistinguishable strip malls. There are indeed some very big homes in Sandy Springs, but no real neighborhoods intertwined into a community. Instead, Sandy Springs is made up of subdivision enclaves, with one entrance and exit onto a major road. Of course this pattern of development makes for a horrendous traffic situation. If you try to walk anywhere in Sandy Springs be prepared for people to give you looks of disbelief: "Why is this crazy person trying to walk, and not drive?" What few sidewalks that do exist end abruptly and force pedestrians to walk in the street or navigate around fast food drive throughs. Sandy Springs can call itself a city if it wants to, but I cannot find anything there that I would associate with a city.

Evans, GA

Strip Malls and Cookie Cutter Subdivisions
- 5/25/2006
Evans could be any generic suburb in the USA. Lacking any intrinsic character or charm, it is a hodgepodge of bland strip malls, franchise restaurants, and monotonous subdivisions with a maximum of two or three architectural styles.
Having access to an automibile is necessary, as walking to anything in Evans is virtually impossible. There are virtually no sidewalks and there is no public transportation. There is a retirement home across from one of the largest Shopping Centers, where on a daily basis you will see elderly residents braving life and limb to cross a dangerous 4 lane highway with no crosswalk to go shopping. Children are virtually imprisoned in their podlike subdivisions, unable to visit friends unless Mom or Dad haul them in the SUV.
The local government is run by realestate speculators and developers, and their mantra is "All Growth is Good" , despite if it puts a burden on the taxpayers, roads,a nd overcrowds the schools. The local government refusues to adopt impact fees to make new growth pay for itself, rather than putting the burden on existing homeowners.
On a positive note, Evans is only about a 20 minute drive from Thurmond Lake, and is about 15 minutes from Augusta, which has a nice riverfront.

Olfactory Torture!
- 5/25/2006
Everytime I have to come to the Disgusta area for work, I nearly gag from the putrid stench. The whole place smells like a giant butt..just NASTY! There's no telling how much noxious pollutants you people are breathing in on a daily basis. I guess those of you who grew up in Disgusta just got used to the STINK.. Hard to imagine though.. because it is pretty nauseating: It's like a Crap, sulphur,Chemical, Rottem Eggs Stew brewing in the heat. You can actually see the STINK, as it creates a haze throughout many parts of Disgusta. It's like something you would see in a third world country.
