Rockland, ME

expensive but our primary values are here - 12/26/2013
we are paying our property taxes on a monthly basis now...at $287 per month it is like a mortgage! we have been here 5 years and these taxes have gradually increased $700 per annum! we are assessed at $175,000. the cost of educating children here is out of sync with the rest of maine by $2000-$2500 more per year per student with outdated school buildings, reduced number of students, and an out-of-touch school board.
i would like to talk to the 70 year old couple in bangor maine (AARP REPORT) about how their groceries are $200 per month! the two of us average $1500 per month for shopping at hannaford. bangor couple must be starving! even mediocre restaurants are expensive, at $40 per meal per two people here in rockland.
however, the sea is two blocks away and the air is wonderful to breathe. hannaford is 2 blocks away and is like going to a boutique food shop. health care is good and mostly covered by medicare and disability. we are the county seat so all needs are met here conveniently.
we bought a 2 story farmhouse in town and added a large sun porch and have a fruit garden on 1/3 acre. we had to update all systems, heating and added air conditioning which IS NEEDED here in maine, electrical, plumbing and appliances; redo kitchen, 1 bathroom, 1 living area, and scrap 5 layers of wallpaper off 5 rooms before painting them and the rest of the house inside. we insulated the basement foundation and crawl space, and did the exterior woodwork, using 50 some tubes of caulking. we also have a large loft garage. we like the cold weather and the way of life here. it suits us.
so there are only 3 things we don't like: high property taxes, high food costs and having to put so much money into this 113 year old house to make it livable. we will never get the money back that we put into this house so it is indeed a good thing we plan on staying here. florence moore
