Corning, NY
Beautiful small city -
2/4/2018I grew up in Corning so it will always be special to me. There is no prettier area in the US than the Fingerlakes. That being said, my husband and I have chosen to retire to a lake in Alabama. Taxes have driven us away. $4000 a year for a $100,000 home is just ridiculous. Utilities are also outrageous. There are wonderful places and things to do in the area, people can seem rude if you are from the south, I prefer to say impatient. Most people are nice if you take the time to get to know them, unfortunately those who are rude are really rude and there is a nasty hierarchy in place in the schools and businesses. My family is there so I will always visit often, but I don't think I have ever felt as at home and welcomed as I have in Alabama.
Cedar Bluff is a small town in the northeast corner of the state and just wonderful. To compare 280,000 house on lake taxes 1200. Electric is much cheaper and gas is also. Scenery is beautiful with mountains and lakes and well the weather is a huge bonus.
Back to Corning, though, it is a fun and beautiful place to live, just don't expect it to be cheap. For young people with good paying jobs I would recommend it in a heartbeat.
