Roxbury, CT

Classic New England town - 1/26/2008
Although the cost of living in Roxbury is daunting, there are more middle class people here than the numbers might suggest. The presence of a fair number of celebrities and uber-rich skew the numbers. That's not to say it's a cheap place to live - housing probably starts at half a million.

The town fosters a sense of community unlike any other place I've lived. Everything runs on volunteers - from the moms who take care of school lunches, to the town government, to EMS. Becoming a member of the community here is as simple as choosing the organization you like and volunteering.

The town green is a Norman Rockwell setting, and hundreds of locals turn out for such events as the Christmas tree lighting and the annual tractor parade. Thousands turn out for the Pickin' and Fiddlin' contest in July.

Outdoor recreation opportunities abound, with approaching 20% of the town being held as open space. Bicycling is awesome, the Shepaug river offers kayaking and canoeing in the spring, and there are opportunities for downhill skiing within 2 hours. Also within two hours is Manhattan. Boston is about 3 hours.

Crime is so low as to be almost non-existant. Mailbox bashing is probably the most common crime.
