Southern Maryland...what I like to call the REAL S -
6/5/2010I am not a true Southern Marylander but I have learned to truly appreciate the qualities of MY county and to recognize how Saint Mary's county is really different from the rest of the area that is recognized as Southern Maryland (SOMD). We have at least 5 different cultures in this county alone, the best natural entertainment you can find in one area and close to perfect weather if you like seasons. Although a hurricane will blow through, it has never been bad enough, while I lived here, to require evacuation. The tornados are nothing compared to what I am accustomed to avoiding. Plus we have lots of beautiful sunny days. The snow is usually nothing that can't be handled with a four wheel drive and weight and we have beautiful springs and autums.
Now, the down side is that one of the cultures would be the implants...or those of us brought in by the business related to the Navy base. Although we might love the water, the hiking, the open roads, and plenty of other things to do with nature; we aren't really wanted by the people who were born and raised here. That includes those that might be accepted by the "Family Names" but are only first born generation.
The land is beautiful though everywhere you look there is a picture to be captured in water color, oil, or just photographed.
