Griffin, IN

Community of Griffin, IN - 2/19/2008
Griffin, prior to the early 1900's, used to be known as "Price Station,'' and so-named after one of my great grandfathers. My father, Russell, and his dad, Dan, owned the Price Grain Elevator Company. The town's original name, "Price Station," was painted on a board and hung from the old railroad depot on the west side of the street in the center of town. Shell Oil Company bought that old depot, moved it to the end of town and hung it inside their gasoline/eating facility. Grifin was a community of retired farmers and many oil field workers. All that remains of the Griffin School, grades 1-12, is the gym. It is now used for a variety of social events in the community. Griffin School was closed with the graduation of the last class from high school in 1959. It consolidated with Cynthiana, Poseyville and Wadesville to make up the new North Posey Jr./Sr. High School. I was a member of that new school's first graduation class in 1960. There were many times that Griffin was cut off by flooding rivers - and I can recall having to walk the then-railroad track out of town to awaiting cars. Griffin was a great little small town to live in. I was raised on a farm 1/2 mile west of town and as a teen in the late 1950s, we had two restaurants, one pool hall, two grocery stores, one hardware store, a barber shop that was opened about every two weeks, three churches, and a post-office, and one gasoline/service station. Oh...and the Griffin jr.hi basketball team was known as the ''Whirlwinds,'' and the high school basketball team was known as the tornadoes.
