Dig Deeper on Fort Edward

Glens Falls is a minor industrial center and gateway to the Adirondack Region to the north. It is located just to the north of the Albany–Saratoga Springs area along the Hudson River. The town is quiet and boasts a pleasant small-town feel with low crime, moderate living costs and good air quality, but there isn’t much to do in the immediate town. As typical with the region, economic prospects are not strong. Living costs are moderate; not the cheapest in New York.

The more well-known Saratoga Springs 15 miles south offers a number of cultural amenities in an attractive and historic setting. Lake George to the immediate north offers recreational opportunities and the Lake George Opera Festival. The Adirondacks offer numerous outdoor activities including Lake Placid (of Winter Olympics fame) 85 miles north.

The town is located in a small valley at a sharp bend in the Hudson River. It is surrounded by wooded hills, which become larger to the north, rising eventually to 5,300 feet in the heavily wooded Adirondacks. The metro area spreads 30 miles north through Warren County and east through Washington County to the Vermont border. The climate is continental but modified by the mountains.

Summer days are warm and sunny and sometimes humid, but evening temperatures fall quickly. Hot, sticky weather occurs most summers, and most precipitation comes from summer thunderstorms. Winters are cold, frequently dropping below 10 degrees and even 0 degrees, with heavy and persistent snow during many winters. First freeze is end of September, last is mid-May.
