The City Council consists of five members who are elected at-large to serve four-year terms, with elections taking place every two years for alternating seats. The Mayor and Mayor Pro Tem are selected from the current council members and serve for one year at a time with no term limits. Working alongside the City Council is the City Manager, who is appointed by the Council to oversee the daily operations of Laguna Niguel. \nThe city of Laguna Niguel takes its political process seriously, giving residents the opportunity to make their voices heard through public comment periods held during council meetings and other outreach events. Laguna Niguel also supports multiple civic organizations that focus on voter registration, youth development, environmental protection, and more. Here at BestPlaces, we were looking at the voting patterns since the 2000 election and realized that we could express the results of each election as one letter. R if the Republican Party candidate won, D if the Democratic Party candidate won and I if the Independent Party candidate won. The six elections (2000, 2004, 2008, 2012, 2016, 2020) would be expressed as six-letter word (R R D R R).
