It is home to many outdoor activities, such as Amicalola Falls State Park and Lake Lanier. In terms of politics, Dawsonville has a mayor-city council form of government and utilizes an open town hall meeting format to ensure that citizens have their voices heard. The mayor acts as the chief executive of the city and is elected by the citizens every four years. The Council consists of five members who are responsible for creating laws and ordinances, setting budgets, appoint committees, and other duties. They are also elected by the citizens on a staggered basis every two years. Local political candidates for both positions must be residents of Dawsonville who are registered voters with no criminal record or pending charges. All voting for these positions happens during local elections.
