New Shoreham, Rhode Island is a small town with a population of about 1,400 residents. Politically it is represented by many local candidates in both the state legislature and local government. In the state legislature, the town is represented by Senator James Sheehan and Representative Blake Filippi. At the local level, there are seven elected Town Council Members who work to make decisions for the best interests of the community. The Town Council meetings are open to the public and provide an opportunity for citizens to express their opinions on various issues. Additionally, there is an advisory board of unpaid volunteers that work together to assess projects proposed by the Town Council before final approval. This allows for more public input before any changes are made permanently in New Shoreham. It is clear that politics in this small town remain very localized and driven by citizen participation.
