Fort Thompson, SD is a small rural community that has a deep history and culture. It is located in central South Dakota, near the Missouri River. The community is made up of many Native American tribes, including the Yankton Sioux Tribe, Lower Brule Sioux Tribe, and Sisseton-Wahpeton Oyate. Although Fort Thompson is not very large, it has had a long and complex relationship with politics. The local government consists of six elected officials from each tribe in the area.
