Could Use Some Work - 9/26/2022

This city has a lot of potential, but it could use some work. For example, it seems to lack things that other cities have. And there is a lack of atmosphere and charm. Charlotte feels very monotonous. Perhaps with the influx of people in a generation or two, all that can change. I really look forward to seeing this happen. I believe this city is very misunderstood. But remember this is a young city compared to all others. I’m wondering if public transportation could be approved. I’m thinking people are seeing this city in a far too negative light. All in all, Charlotte is an upcoming city with a lot of potential. Just try to make the best of it, if you can.

Pretty, Easy City - 9/27/2021

Very new transplant (~6 weeks) so first impressions and reasons why I moved here: -great year-round weather, if you don't mind humidity-- less hot in summer than TX/AZ and less snowy in winter than Chi/Colorado Springs. -Super divided in terms of how pretty/clean it is, crime, etc. The nice areas are beautiful and the other areas fall off fast without a ton in between. -<1 hour to the lake, 1-2 hours to mountains, ~3 hours to the beach -Coming from a large northern city I was worried about anywhere feeling too Southern but it's a ton of transplants. I have yet to meet someone actually from Charlotte. -It does feel really sterile, culturally, compared to Austin/Chicago/LA. That said, I think it's a little unfair to compare it to Asheville/Charleston etc. because those places are chock full of charm in a very /touristy/ way -Also no really walkable neighborhoods-- the "giant suburb" criticisms aren't wrong -I wouldn't say boring, though (...and a lot of those comments come from people in the DEEP burbs)-- I like that it's a big enough city I can easily find lots of people who like the same hobbies as me, etc. and there's been something fun going on every weekend I've been here.

Based on Personal Perception - 6/14/2021

Six years ago I accepted a transfer to work in Charlotte NC and, now, I can't wait to get out. I believe that opinions regarding the city of Charlotte are based on personal experiences. For me, after living in cities such as : Roma, Milano, London, New Orleans and Manhattan NY, Charlotte is absolutely boring. As a young city it lacks diversity and has no identity, also, it lacks history. It is a very clean city and most parts are safe to walk but, as any other city, it has it's secret agenda's. Of course for those that have lived in small centers Charlotte appears to have all of those elements I don't see when comparing it to my personal experiences. There are other cities that are way more interesting such as: Charleston, Savannah and, of course, New Orleans the eternal party city, rich with culture and where everyone is super laid back and friendly.

Super Sprawl City - 3/29/2021

Super Sprawl city. Very clean, racially diverse, and appears economically strong. The downtown area is unbelievably small for a 800,000+ population size city. Compared to Seattle or Portland, Charlotte feels like a super suburb instead of an urban city. Oh, and on the weekends you can't even enjoy a drink out because all you hear is guys in their muscle cars reving their V8 engines or on their motorcycles to show off to pedestrians. On the plus side, very clean, not a lot of visible homelessness, and has a decent amount of amenities. If you're thinking of moving here, go visit first. On paper Charlotte might seem promising but for me at least it's a no-go.

Not for everyone - 2/6/2021

Pro: clean, dog friendly, job opportunities, rent cost, lakes and a lot of trees everywhere. Contra: boring, suburbs lifestyle, I moved from Miami to Charlotte two years ago. I wanna leave. I know that rate as boring a place is subjective, but the only way you won't consider this place boring is because you come from most boring place. It is pretty and clean, but I live in Ballantyne, south center is more expensive, I don't think cheaper places look pretty. I have lived in many different cities around the world, and visited as tourists a lot, this city is for retirement or people who is used to live in suburbs towns, who like to go to the lake, and it is used to no see people around. The best choice during pandemic thought

Charlotte is a boring city with no identity - 10/1/2020

I lived in Charlotte 10 years. I've grown to despise Charlotte in that time period. Literally nothing to do besides go to breweries on the weekend, unless you like the occasional Panthers or basketball games. It's just one big sprawl with sh*t roads, bad traffic, and poor city planning/cohesiveness. The city just has no identity or anything that draws you to it besides it's new and cheaper than the cities all the Northerners are moving from to bombard Charlotte. I only suggest people moving here so they don't fill up any of the cities I'd prefer to move to...which I did this year.

For Heaven’s Sake! - 6/27/2019

At first glance Charlotte appears to be an attractive place for families and singles of all ages alike. Scrutinizing it in depth however, revealed to me that below the towering banks and luxury apartments of uptown, there just isn’t a great deal of substance. I lived in Charlotte in the mid ‘80s. At that time, Charlotte was one of the best cities in NC for nightlife and entertainment and that remains true today, but the energy just isn’t there! I moved back to the metro area almost 20 years ago and settled in a suburb about 30 miles from uptown. Maybe living in the city limits would prove to be a more favorable experience, but it is not on my list of destinations if I ever decide to make another move. It is growing rapidly and the city leaders are working diligently to keep up with the growth by investing in new infrastructure, but for a city of over 800,000 the urban feeling is simply not there. Moving back to the area helped me come to this conclusion, southern hospitality is a myth and the phrase “bless his heart” translates to “what a f#@*ing idiot!!” If you are considering moving to a city in NC, check out Asheville, Wilmington and Winston-Salem, before you settle on Charlotte!

Charlotte is a tiny dump surrounded by suburban sp - 6/23/2019

This isn't a city, it's a sprawling suburb with jammed roads and nowhere really to go or do. Skip Charlotte altogether. Just a boring big box suburb with massive city crime, drugs, traffic, extreme poverty and pollution. Frankly, ignore all of North Carolina for living and look elsewhere.

Charlotte - the best city for me. - 6/4/2019

I moved to Charlotte in 2003 and still live here now. I've lived in Charleston SC, Denver CO, Tucson AZ, Santa Cruz, CA, Greenville SC and Winston-Salem NC. Every city I've ever lived in or visited has issues, it's in every city in every country, so there is NO point in complaining about traffic, crime, roads.... every city has it. West Charlotte is were the crime is. I live in South Charlotte near Ballantyne. I love this city and will probably retire here. Charlotte is large enough to have all the amenities of a big city, but Charlotte isn't so large that we have the major issues that larger cities have. Charlotte is clean, there is little to no crime where I live and travel. There are PLENTY of white collar jobs making 6 figures. Housing is exceptionally affordable and our city has plenty of room to grow and expand outwards. We are 3 hours to the beaches and 2 hours to the mountains. The city is diverse but fairly conservative from what I experience. Charlotte is a good fit for me and my family. We might not have the restaurants like NY, San Fran or Chicago, or fancy Broadway shows/plays, but if you are looking for a safe, clean and exceptionally reasonable place to raise your family - Charlotte is it.

Still a S____hole. - 5/19/2019

I wrote a review of Charlotte several years back, and decided to write how things how gotten here since that time. In one word.....definitely WORSE. People come here seeing how beautiful and clean it is, but stay here a while, and you will get the true feel. Crime is soaring out of control with a record number of murders this year. There are shootings nearly everyday; even in "safe uptown". The traffic is even more congested, people drive like they're the only ones on the road, Charlotte has been rated #12 in the nation for aggressive drivers. Roads are even more torn up, even more random road closings. No improvement in the transit system; buses and even the trains will randomly have "technical difficulties" and just cancel routes. School system is still horrid, and all this town cares about is getting in more and more people than the roads, schools, hospitals, police and fire departments can support. Oh, but your tax dollars are going to build another stadium. If there is ANY bad publicity about the town, it is swept under the rug; negative news stories and youtube videos (think about the riots) are removed from the internet. It is NOT what it is cracked up to be, and it is NOT a good choice as far as moving here. Property taxes are soaring, with new assessments made in 2018 with people seeing increases in their property taxes as much as 60%. It may make the lists of "best places to live" but trust me as a resident for close to three decades. I KNOW what I'm talking about. Trust me on this one.....find someplace else, because that's what I'm doing as soon as I can.

Too Suburban to be a city... - 3/16/2019

Charlotte had potential before it let Big Box Shopping Centers and housing developments build the "city". If Charlotte would have built a city instead of Cookie Cutter Developments and Big Box Shopping Centers I believe it would be more of a vibrant, unique city. Instead it built same old boring crap that is off every exit across the USA. Charlotte is not a city it is one big giant suburb. Just look at maps of the area. It is filled with cul-de-sac developments and not city blocks. It is not a CITY that it advertises to be!

Not what I thought it would be - 8/22/2018

I have been here for three years. I have found it to be very over crowded (and getting worse by the day), and not as inexpensive as it first seemed. The only plan that the city planners seem to have is to get more and more people in without thinking for a second about the infrastructure that can no longer accommodate the population. Apartment buildings and condos (as well as houses) are being built at an alarming rate, but the areas that they are built in have the same police, fire, schools, emergency services, and post offices that they always had. We sometimes get our mail delivered at 8pm and on Sundays! Think the post office is overwhelmed? The health care system is extremely overtaxed as well, it can take a month to get an appt. with a doctor. Looks like it used to be a beautiful city, but that has gone by. Don't even get me started about the traffic. The roads can't handle the population, either, and talk about idiot drivers! It is not a question of if you will get into an accident, but when. After three years, I am planning my exit.

Very Underrated... but maybe that's a GOOD thing? - 7/5/2018

As another reviewer posted earlier... This city DOES remind me of a "young" Dallas... what with the Uptown, NoDa, Dilworth neighborhoods and the VERY impressive Light Rail. This city impresses me with it's walkability and urbanity as well as being fairly "clean" much like Minneapolis, MN actually. This is suprising b/c most cities of those sizes(and bigger) are not as aesthetically "pretty" and CLEAN too, which is a big draw for some! (it is for me) More of a "southern" feel and less of that wannabe feel you might get in the Southwest. PLUS, it's the banking (or 2nd behind NYC) capital of the US.

The Next Dallas... - 5/15/2018

This city will be the NEXT Dallas.. Or what Dallas was in it's PEAK YEARS (minus the fact that NC has a state tax lol) The Uptown Charlotte area is INCREDIBLE and really actually has/did "impress me". I own a condo off McKinney in Uptown Dallas and, even with that, the Uptown Charlotte REALLY impressed me It's Dallas withOUT the pretentiousness and WITH the "Southern charm" We will see.

Big mistake moving here - 4/7/2018

We relocated from Miami mainly to escape the outrageous real estate prices and rude people. I researched places to move and decided to settle in Charlotte. We purchased a home and the school assigned is decent. There is not much to do unless you want to drive 1-3 hours to the mountains or the ocean. The taxes are extremely high. But none of this bothered me as much as to consider moving than the constant spraying they do in the sky. In the last two weeks we have had 1 day of blue skies. Planes are constantly spraying chemtrails and the sky is constantly overcast. The day starts off with the sky blue and sunny and then the planes come out to spray and completely ruin the day. After the day start to clear up all that crap they come out again in the evening. Locals either tell me they are used to it and others tell me its just contrails which they are not. This is not normal and it’s quite worrisome. There have been protests but nothing gets done. In a town close by to me called Huntersville 19 people have been diagnoses with a rare eye cancer and now the same cluster is being reported in a town called Gastonia. I’m terribly devasted that we need to move again because I do not feel our health is safe here.

Nothing to do EVER!! - 11/8/2017

Unless you are drunk or 70+years old you will be content. There is nothing to do but drink and stay on your 5,000sq home that cost you 300,000. Lol There is a reason WHY in big trendy cities that there is a lot to do the cost of homes are higher per square footage. I particularly prefer to live in a smaller home but in a city where there is LIFE!!!!! Not to mention the weather SUCKS!! There is no real winter or real summer because all you have is a NASTY LAKE filled with mosquitoes. All you get is a high in allergies season in the spring. I DO NOT RECOMMEND THIS BORING PLACE if you like the outdoors and like a city that is alive and plenty things to do. This place is BORING!! Way too many old people that all they do is drink or go to the groceries.??

I am OUTA here! - 3/4/2017

I've lived in this town for 26 years. Loved it when I came, but can't wait to get out. Charlotte is like a big shiny apple...which is rotting inside. Cheap housing, yes. Pretty, yes. Beware, though, of where you buy your home, because Charlotte city planners have a very funny way of slipping in low income housing into middle income areas, and sad as it is, end up having the value of your home plummet. What this town also doesn't advertise is the absolutely horrid school system, crime that is spiraling out of control (check the crime rates on this site; not very pretty!) Gang activity (yup, one of the gangs was featured on "Gangland" on the History Channel), heroin and drugs rampant (yes, it's in the high schools as an epidemic AS reported by our own news team, and it is due to the fact that Charlotte is a great "midway town" for drugs being run from Atlanta to Washington DC)) horrendous traffic with beat up roads that are always under construction, massive construction everywhere with random road closings during rush hour, crappy sports teams. The city would rather build another stadium then invest in some type of cultural activity. But why bother? This city doesn't embrace diversity, although they advertise "cultural diversity" in the "new South". Looking to relocate? If your male, single and young, this is the place for you. If the same but female, move somewhere else, because this town has an overabundance of young females, many looking for potential mates. And the selection pool is not that great. If you have a family with school age children, good luck!!! Unless you have the money to pay for private school who's tuition rivals college, OR, you make great money and can live in a very specific part of town (South Charlotte) you'll end up tearing your hair out trying to get a half decent education for you child. And chances are, they'll get bussed to a school miles away from your home, although there is a school right down the street. No neighborhood schools here!! Buy a home based on school assignments? Jokes on you, because they change the boundaries ALL the time, so your child may end up switching schools several times in his school career. If you would like to find some place to take your child to expose them to a bit of culture, or a museum, good luck there too. The Discovery Place has the EXACT same displays today as they had 26 years ago. Really sad that the city won't invest in places that would actually supplement your child's education. The Nature Museum is an absolute JOKE; again, not updated in 26 years. If you like to eat, drink, and shop, this is also a great place for you, because that is about ALL there is to do. But be very particular about where you shop; some malls have turned into great "hangouts" for people, so they've had to institute curfews to reduce the overabundance of kids just "hanging out" at the mall. Try to ignore the fact that there have been shootings at the mall, involving gang members. The air quality is bad (google it...it's in top ten cities for the worst air smog in the country) the Catawba River is one of the most polluted in the country, (google that one as well, especially since it effects the drinking water) the lakes are polluted as well (coal ash, nuclear energy waste, sewage....). The most recent development is an unusually high amount of rare eye cancers in the area, as well as a staggering increase in thyroid cancer. These are FACTS. Something is wrong around here. So, if you're considering moving here, please do yourself a favor. Do research. A LOT of research. As the news reported after the LAST riot here, "Charlotte is not the Oz it is cracked up to be." And I'm SURE someone will reply to this and say "Then MOVE!!!" So I will reply beforehand with this "As Soon As I Can, I'm the heck outa here!!!"
