Great place to live and visit - 6/18/2021

The center of Cheyenne retains the character of America with traditional western values. Easy and we'll maintained walking to parks and downtown restaurants/bars/shops which offer something different and more than the homaginized chain offerings found throughout so much of slumburbia America

A great place if you can stand the winter wind - 2/24/2021

My husband, dogs, and I have lived in Cheyenne for almost two years. The pros: Cheyenne is a really nice place, especially if you have kids or dogs. The weather in the summer is amazing! It's warm, but not too hot, with no humidity. There are hail storms in the summer, but they haven't been too bad on the side of town we are in. There are miles of parks and trails to use for walking or biking. Even biking on the main roads isn't too bad! The library is superb, there is a nice botanical garden, and national parks aren't too far away. Crime is low, but I did have a run in with someone trespassing on my property this week. The locals are generally friendly and welcoming. There is lots of shopping in town and whatever you can't find here you will find 45 minutes down the road in Fort Collins. The breweries downtown (Accomplice, Daniel Marks, and Black Eagle) are phenomenal! There are 8 Starbucks throughout town so you're never far from your coffee fix. The college campus here is really nice and offers a lot to the community. The cons: The wind in the winters is BRUTAL. We would live here forever if not for the wind. It's so bad that I don't leave the house unless I have to on those super windy days (a majority of the days in the winter). It's not terribly cold here in the winters, there is a fair amount of snow, but the wind makes it unbearable! Housing prices here are outrageous and rentals are slim pickins. I would say the cost of living is pretty high here. Cheaper than Colorado, but still pretty high compared to other parts of the country. Overall, I would recommend living in Cheyenne as long as you can stand the wind in the winters :)

Cold place to live. - 12/15/2020

I've lived in Cheyenne for almost 52 years. Most things here are just right. Housing, on the other hand, is ridiculously high. Thereb isn't any decent public housing to be had, as even after paying for the apartment you check doesn't seem to cover food, medical, and transportation cost.

Cheyenne is nice and great if it does not change. - 7/15/2020

I have lived in Cheyenne for a year, and I loved it. Pros 1. Small, not crazy city 2. Plenty of stores and restaurants 3. People are respectful 4. Live next to Warren AF Base, so I see great Air Force air crafts 5. Great dairy and meat Cons 1. Living next to and airport 2. Schools 3. Fruit is not the greatest 4. More people are flocking here, ruining the small city environment 5. Winters

It has been a great place to raise a family. - 4/29/2019

I've lived in Cheyenne for 35+ years. Prior to coming to Cheyenne, I lived in the SE us. I'm now looking to move away. I'd like a more inexpensive place to retire, and I'd like more temperate weather. I'll start with the good. It is a small safe town and the people are friendly. There is adequate shopping. There is also some entertainment (plays, concerts, etc...) locally and even more available along the front range. There are numerous parks and a greenway. The Summers are pleasant with warm days and cool nights. There is also a community college in town and it is a short drive (50 miles) to the University of Wyoming. There are also employment opportunities: state government, Air Force base, railroad and some datacenters, etc.... Now the bad: Got to start with the wind. Many very wind days (50+ mph). These happen all year long. The other big weather problem is hail. I think, the size of the hail and the frequency of the storms seems to be increasing. Winter starts in mid-September and frequently lasts until early May (there will be may wonderful days, but there will also be many very cold days). I think the biggest expense is housing. There also seems to be frequent shortages of rental housing and affordable houses for sale.

Long time resident. - 7/28/2018

Cheyenne overall is a great place to live. As a military brat and serving myself i have lived in dozens of communites nationwide and rank Cheyenne closer to the top. Average cost of living and cheaper than most of the front range. Some of the best summer weather in the entire country but winters are definetly windy and cool. Shopping has most everything you need but if it is not here it is available 45 minutes away. Many food styles are available but if your taste is not found it too will be available 45 miles away. Cheyenne is a conservative community with some of the lowest taxes in the country but is still one of the most progressive cities in Wyoming. Most healthcare options are available in Cheyenne with the hospital and several local clinics being part of much larger healthcare systems from Denver Colorado. Cheyenne has great highway access and commutes a very quick travelling almost anywhere in the community in less than 15 minutes. Cheyenne does not currently have air service but even when it did i preferred driving to Denver International which is 1 hour and 40 minute drive. Education is very good with great choice including an IB program. Teacher pay is currently some of the best in the country. The state legislature is currently putting some stress on the education system. Overall Cheyenne will provide a great place for you and your family to live if you can handle the wind from Labor Day to Memorial Day.

Great place - 6/17/2018

Low crime, low cost of living, great friendly people that typically give you the greeting of the day and open doors for you, safe to walk downtown and not many homeless people in other words liberals haven't ruined it yet however it is 36% liberal I believe the most in WY for a city but its still a great place.

A big small town - 5/31/2018

Not too much things to do. Feels like the town's been forgotten by the world. No upper scaled businesses. Locals are very conservative and oppose to accept new things. Old people and losers are stuck in town for low paced life. Anyone who has ambitious, better job, or good financial strength will move to Colorado. Slow drivers everywhere reflect the backward of living attitude. Tons of coffee shops, sandwich, burger, and taco shops. Cost of living is low. 9 months of winter, windy all the time. You won't feel very happy living here. Locals are arrogant with limited vision to the world. Like a frog sitting at the bottom of the well, believing the sky is just as big as the well.

Two Stars - Wyoming would get more, just not here - 1/22/2018

When I could not find affordable housing in Ft Collins/ Loveland, CO, I went on up to Cheyenne, WY and found some affordable housing. It was also housing run by a lady who later did some odd (and I do mean, odd) things to me! Scary - really. There is a lot of good about the city. Its historic, beautiful really - Art is encouraged (and music). That part was really good for me. But if you study its history, it was also full of scoundrels. Well, it has many good people - but its still full of scoundrels too. However, if you are there, I don't know if the re-vamping of the Capitol building is complete or not, but it was one of the most beautiful Capitol buildings I ever saw! Do not trust medical - not unless its greatly improved since I was there in 2015. It got me in trouble, and I was appalled - I also saw horrible treatment of others (but it may have improved. When I lived there in 2015, everybody would not trust medical there and went to Ft Collins. Somebody told me some Ft Collins folks now took it over - so it may have improved - I don't know). I never really settled in, but it was beautiful and that helped. Art and music were so encouraged too, and that's a big deal for me! So its not all bad. It certainly had some good points. But I personally will not live there again - I might live in WY again - just not there.

Mixed Review - 3/3/2016

I lived here for less than 1 year. It was so so. Its a larger, small town - a larger city in Wyoming, with a small town feel. It has some very pretty parks, and a rich and interesting history. It has many historical sites that are fascinating to learn about and visit. I did a lot of photography in the area, and it was a good place for it. There are many "nature" options here too, and with Curt Gowdy State Park and Vedawoo to the West of it, outdoor recreation was easy and fun. I am a church goer and can tell you the religious climate is conservative, overall. I never was totally settled in a church, but still have one good friend I met at a local church there. Overall, my religious experience in Cheyenne was better than in some other places I'd lived. A note: Healthcare here is not good. A lot of people travel to Ft. Collins, CO for good health care. I do not recommend the local hospital at all, FYI. Employment options were not too good for me here either, although I was employed for a while. So honestly, I have mixed feelings about it. It did seem to me sometimes that people "made up the rules as they went along" - even government. So a note on that.

I like Cheyenne - 12/2/2015

I'm surprised by the comments I've read here. I grew up in Cheyenne, moved away for 2 decades and came back. Cheyenne was a great place to grow up and I was happy to bring my kids back to finish school. Cheyenne is a giving community, where volunteerism is the of the highest priority for most. The downtown is undergoing changes that are exciting to everyone. New restaurants and brewery's are slowly opening, along with events such as downtown concerts and art festivals. Morris House Bistro and the Chop House offer amazing food, with more restaurants coming. If you can't find something to do in Cheyenne you aren't really trying. They have millennial groups are involved in the community, and great tech jobs. If you are a qualified techie - you have your choice of multiple jobs. Even Microsoft and Green House Data call Cheyenne home. The school system still offers art, PE and music to all it's students, I think most take these privileges for granted. The housing fine-there is a lovely historic neighborhood, lots of new housing. Yes their is an area that is considered less desirable side of Cheyenne, but I have to tell you, the people who live their love the South Side, and have worked to revitalize it. They even have a new beautiful high school. The proximity to Ft. Collins and Denver is good. If you can't find it in Cheyenne, you can find it within 30 minutes. Oh yeah, I can get from my home to work in less than 15 minutes with little traffic. Can't beat that.

cheyenne wy. is not a nice place to live - 9/20/2015

greedy little town , the government has cut funds so harshly the disabled and elderly don't have a chance , there's no work no affordable housing and what is affordable is a dump ,bed bugs leaky roofs flooding dirt mold land lords are not required to keek the property to a standard, no place to go if you don't drink booze it's very expensive here i tried the library it's small very limited and the restaurants are not great 2 are ok 1 is great i just can't get over the fact that most people here will not donate food and time to help the disabled and elderly also the crime rate here is growing and the cheyenne police don't really do anything to prevent crime they have harassed it's people by stopping them and questioning them for no reason it's not even a nice place to visit it's just another place to go to get drunk it's to cold in the winter and the winters are long the transit system here is lousy no one in government whether it be an employee or an official cares about the people here

Pros and Cons - 11/17/2013

After living here for 30+ years, it's time for a more temperate climate. It has been a wonderful place to raise children. Low crime, no state income tax. The wind and bitter cold are the two things I won't miss. Right now the SE corner of the state is in a boom cycle. High paying oil field jobs. If you have a CDL, you will have no problem gaining employment.

Quiet- Not a lot to do - SMALL town - 10/19/2013

Cheyenne is a small town. People live here for a long time. A lot of seniors. After college most leave, to pursue careers in more thriving communities. It is a nice place to come home to, to visit your parents. But if you are looking for social life, it isn't here. Traffic & commute time isn't here either, nor are swarms of people, or a high cost of living. There isn't a lot of crime. However the trade off is, there isn't anything else either. There are a few chain restaurants- olive garden, red lobster etc., on the main drag. But you will not find anything trendy, hip, or unusual. If you like quiet, people minding their own business, having a nice home for a low price, etc., you can get that here. As long as you recognize that you will need to travel 1 and 1/2 hours to get to Denver and have some fun. Even Fort Collins which is 1/2 hour away can give you a little variety/more things to do. So if you live in Cheyenne, the town itself is not a hotbed of activity, but you can have a very good quality of life, at a less expensive cost then other parts of the country.

Climate - 9/8/2013

Cheyenne is a great place to live with a varied climate. It is just like any other place, as it has good points and bad points. There is greater diversity with race and religion with more people moving in now, and there is population growth. Cheyenne is a unique place with lots to do. One gets use to the wind after awhile. Not isolating is the key. The wind has not blown in days, so everything is great. One must generate a positive attitude to live here. There is much natural beauty to Cheyenne. There is a lot to do here. Welcome to Cheyenne!

HOME PRICES - 7/7/2013

HELLO EVERYONE. CHEYENNE IS NOT A BAD TOWN. SLOWER PACE OF LIFE, RELATIVELY LOWER TAXES,SOMEWHAT FRIENDLIER THAN MANY LARGE CITIES.. I LIVED IN CHEYENNE FOR MANY YEARS AND MOVED TO SHERIDAN 11 YEARS AGO. THE BIGGEST ISSUE FACING MANY PEOPLE, ESPECIALLY YOUNG FOLK, IS THE HIGH COST OF REALESTATE IN CHEYENNE. THE AVERAGE HOME THERE COSTS 176,000. I CANT SEE THE HOW THE LOCAL JOB MARKET CAN SUPPORT SUCH HIGH REALESTATE PRICES. YES. CHEYENNE HAS THE AIRFORCE BASE AND MANY OTHER GOVERNMENT INSTITUTIONS. BUT NOT EVERYONE HAS A HIGH PAYING FEDREAL JOB. HOUSING UNFORTUNATELY, HAS BECOME PRICEY THROUGHOUT MOST WESTERN STATES.THE SITUATION IN NORTHERN COLORADO IS FAR WORSE AND MORE EXPENSIVE.. MOST WESTERN TOWNS THAT ARE CLOSE TO MOUNTAIN VISTAS HAVE BECOME UNAFORDABLE TO LIVE.. TWENTY YEARS AGO A COMMON MAN COULD BUY A NICE MODEST 2 BEDROOM ONE BATH HOUSE FOR 50 TO 60 THOUSAND. NOT ANYMORE. THESE PRICES CONTINUE TO INCREASE DUE TO THE INFLUX OF OUT OF STATERS LOOKING TO RELOCATE AWAY FROM HIGH TAXES, BIG CITIES,BETTER QUALITY OF LIFE FOR FAMILIES, CRIME ETC.. GREED NOW RULES WESTERN TOWNS.. BEFORE YOU DECIDE TO MAKE A MOVE WAY OUT WEST, MAKE SURE YOU ARE READY TO DISH OUT HIGH DOLLAR RENT AND REALESTATE COSTS. OTHER THAN THAT LIFE IS PRETTY GOOD!!!
