My home town, Jersey City - 6/23/2009

Jersey City has improved over the past 10-15 years, especially Downtown Jersey City. It has the charm of brownstone homes and the appeal of new high rise condo buildings. Its close proximity to NYC (10 minutes by PATH trains) is most of its draw. There are still many life long residents that add a touch of old time Jersey City; the incredible mix of ethnicity is more diverse than NYC with neighborhoods and restaurants as proof. It is a fast paced city with not a very high quality of life. Its my home town and to me it will always be home, but a change would be nice.

It's not that bad - 9/22/2008

I'm fairly young but I grew up in this city, and it's not that bad. Some people say it's dangerous and I beg to differ. If you come from the suburbs perhaps you may feel threatened here, but if you've lived in a city and have street smarts you'll be fine. The quality of life here depends on where you live, downtown is great, if you have a lot of money, plus it's very close to NYC. Otherwise, there are other neighborhoods that are worth considering, like the Heights, Greenville and Society Hill. I grew up in LaFayette, but you may want to stay away from there. The city is quickly progressing and becoming better. My only fear is that the poorer parts of the city will be left behind.

convenience - 7/22/2008

for getting to and from NYC and to the suburbs, Jersey City is great. 6 minutes into Manhattan (without traffic), and about 5 minutes from highways.

Congestion - 3/23/2008

Jersey City is large enough to have very different areas when it comes to quality of life. There are the affluent areas and the poor areas. The cost of housing in the affluent downtown Jersey City is only slightly less expensive than Manhattan prices. Jersey City recently repaved many of the major roads which improved the quality of driving significantly. Many roads are still in need of repair however. The seasonal temperature extremes and high traffic cause the roads to deteriorate faster than the city can repair them. Real estate property taxes are very high and appear to be much higher than national averages. The most influential factor may be the congestion. It affects everyday life in small and cumulative ways. People get used to the congestion as a person may get used to a daily bop in the head. It's bearable and irrational at the same time.

Interesting Place to Live - 3/5/2008

I love Jersey City! It is so close to Manhattan so you have all that NYC has to offer, right at your doorstep. Jersey City is also very diverse. There is not a ton to do right in Jersey City but that is changing.

Definitely Not a Contender for a Best Places List - 4/29/2007

I lived in Jersey City while in college and graduate school. There are small pockets of Jersey City, down by the waterfront, that are building up into yuppie communities, but for the most part the city is dangerous and an eye soar. If you want to feel safe walking down your street at night, this is not the city for you. It's extemely congested, overpriced, and did I mention dangerous? There is a school in Jersey City that is ranked highly - but sources who teach in the district say it's only because they send the city's best and brightest there and throw all their money into it. There are also two private schools, St. Dominics and St. Peters which are rather good, but most of these students are bussed in from neighboring towns. This is not a city I would want to raise children in unless I had no other alternative. The perks are it's proximity to New York City and Hoboken , with path trains traveling to and from. However, if you're looking for a great town with plenty of nightlife and direct path trains to New York City, travel one town over to Hoboken. It's the ultimate haven for young professionals.

Being born and raised in Jersey City, and now having travelled extensively throughout the U.S., I can only say that 'it can't get any worse than Jersey City'. So the good news is you have something to look forward to, that is 'LEAVING'

Jersey City, NJ - 11/28/2006

While trains and ferries from Jersey City to Manhattan run frequently during the week, many lines shut down on the weekends and others run less often.

Still Expensive without ammenities - 8/15/2006

Jersey City is an easy commute to Manhattan, and is slightly less expensive, but the infrastructure is not yet in place - where are the groceries, drugstores, restaurants, etc?

Jersey City is a little rough around the edges, with the crime and crowdedness associated with a big city, but it is closer to Manhattan than some parts of Manhattan. It has many subway links to downtown and midtown, various ferry services and of course, the Holland tunnel right nearby.

Close to the Big Apple, but this place stinks! - 7/12/2006

Living here is fine for now; cheaper rents, close to ammenities, and transportation. I fear settling here and raising children. The streets are scary and the schools are worse.

In 10 years from now Jersey City is going to become another Manhattern sorta area. But because of it's over population & crime , It may get higher ranking in all sorta "Crime".

they do have some very well rated schools here BUT my kid will never, ever, ever go to a public school here. lots of private schools that everyone tries to get their kids into.

incredibly escalating property prices due to New Yorkers deciding this is the '6 borough'. property taxes are a nightmare and what are they spending all that tax money on? certainly not to repair the streets!

climate not too bad - 4/16/2006

humid, warm summers. lots of rain, but this is a coastal area. watch out for the nor'easters which can drop a LOT of snow on you. Does get cold here but not near as harsh as the midwest where I am from.

the 6th borough - 1/24/2006

Jersey City is like the 6th borough of New York City. I didnt think I'd like "Dirty Jersey" but there are some things I miss about it. Jersey City is so close to Manhattan its ridiculous. The public transportation that links Jersey City to NYC is great. You can easily get to the city in about 20 to 30 minutes on train or bus from Jersey City. You may not be able to take a leisurely stroll in Jersey City but I found that getting to the basics like grocers, corner stores, etc. was convenient. If you don't want to live in NYC but want to be in NYC, this is the perfect place. Housing is a lot cheaper and you still get the benefits of being in a NYC borough.
