Screw Stockton. - 10/31/2020

Since living here, i have been subjected to several hate crimes, and for NO REASON. spent week at french camp county hospital, after being beaten in a coma by group of 3 people. Got pushed over while carrying boxes into fedex. Got cussed out at usps...and called a white ass cracker. Crime rates are trash here, murder rate is one of worst in country, cant wait to move, this place is pure garbage. Terrible place if you have kids.

Stockton - Good if you live in the right area - 6/9/2020

I’ve lived in Stockton, CA for 10 of the last 11 years. I’ve lived in Sacramento, Vacaville, Los Angeles and Monterey in California. I’ve also lived in Duluth, Minnesota and Richmond, Virginia. So this all goes in to my views of Stockton, CA. The best thing about Stockton is the climate, which counts for a great deal to me. It isn’t as great as the CA coast - but for the interior of California - it is one of the best. It does get toasty in the summer - but almost always once the sun goes down , you can open up your windows and the cool breeze from the Bay Area cools it down - you don’t have to run A/C all night like in the Midwest, south , east coast of the US in the summer. The best place to live in Stockton is the northern and western part of the city (or with in 4 miles of eight mile road) - it is generally quiet and a good place for families - crime is low and houses are nice. There isn’t a great deal of choices for night life - better to go for a short drive to Sacramento or a bit longer to the Bay Area for that. Also Stockton comes up short on restaurant choices - there are a few nice ones. It can be a nice place but a bit boating if you live in the right area. Fortunately, Stockton is close to Sacramento and if you need even more choices the Bay Area is just a bit farther away. It’s a great place to explore Northern California - and of you like wine - Lodi is just a very short drive away with lots of great wineries to explore.

Absolutely horrible place to raise a family - 2/12/2020

I have lived in Stockton for most my adult life. It is a HORRIBLE place to raise your kids. The crime is so bad that people don't walk around the neighborhoods. The town is over run with homeless people, gang members, and drug dealers. I am counting the days till we move out of this town.

Some people will love it, others will hate it - 1/30/2020

I personally think the pros outweigh the cons, but the cons are really really bad. Almost every highway overpass has a homeless shantytown under it and you're likely to hear cop sirens at least once if you go near them. The drivers are downright dangerous and ignore pedestrians. Jobs are really hard to find within the city unless you're willing to make the long commute to the bay or Sacramento and there clearly aren't enough social services provided here to prevent homelessness and poverty from skyrocketing, which they are despite the relatively low cost of living. In some neighbourhoods many houses have boarded up windows and foreclosure signs and empty buildings give the eeriest feeling. Some neighbourhoods look like they're in a state of anarchy because of the crime rates and lack of law enforcement. If you can survive all that stuff, you'll find that the city has some amazing parks and trails as well as a huge variety of shopping and dining options. You can buy designer clothes and eat top-quality meals for a fraction of how much they would cost in the bay. The airport just started direct flights to LAX which makes for easier and cheaper ground transport than making the trek to the SMF or SFO airports.

Stockton is home - 10/30/2019

I moved to Stockton from Lodi. I love it. The people are nice, we moved from a "BORING" tract home in Lodi to a beautiful 100 year old home near the University of the Pacific. We love the variety of restaurants, the minor league baseball team The Ports. The UoP Tigers. We could not afford our home in Palo Alto or Sacramento. But we have a charmed life in Stockton. It is like any large city. I grew up in Los Angeles and it was the same, you had Hancock Park and Los Feliz and you had Compton and Rampart. You just have to know how to navigate a city. We are home.

Not Surprised Mother Fers - 10/28/2019

Developers are going all in on Stockton lately and home prices are rising there for a reason as a result. Still quite a shady and corrupt city council as is their history but the Police Department is run by a progressive chief that has the crime going in the right direction, but still not enough as Stockton is still quite violent. Education is growing in the city but still lagging behind due to the crime problems. Just an unfortunate culture of familial criminality that gets passed on generation to generation that is tough to combat no matter who's running the city. But there is slow, steady progress starting to spring up in Stockton.

Stockton is a dump - 9/28/2019

I lived here for college, over a 6 year period. There was no redeeming qualities to this city, except the the low cost of living compared to most cities in CA. The air quality is atrocious, mostly due to agricultural, which gets trapped in the central valley because of adjacent mountains. This contributes to the area having an unpleasant odor, which is aggravated in the summer by blazing heat, which is frequently over 100 degrees.. the winters are, cold, dreary and not comfortable, but it does not snow. The crime rate is high and, for the most part, the quality of the townspeople is low. There's minimal career/professional opportunities outside of trucking and agriculture. Almost everyone that attends the University here leaves for greener pastures. There's minimal recreation outlets, unless you leave the city;however there are some worthwhile places within an hour or two driving, such as Lake Tahoe, Yosemite, Napa, the CA Central Coast and the SF Bay Area...the University of the Pacific is the only redeeming aspect. After 4 years though you will develop a unique appreciation for every where else.

I like it - 9/3/2017

Honestly, I like Stockton. Majority of people I've run into have been super sweet. I dropped some money in a store & the woman behind me let me know I dropped it. Nice selection of stores. Unemployment's high but the colleges seem nice. Everybody has a dog here & those dogs are like their kids, I love it. Another bonus is you're 60 miles from The Bay, like you're literately close to the mountains, city & beach.

High crime and unemployment - 4/21/2017

STOCKTON,CA. is a city with a high crime and unemployment rate with a very large homeless population. This city is unsafe and is not kept up to clean standards due to it being a poor city compare to other existing local surrounding cities such as: Lathrop, Manteca, Tracy, etc.

Commute to Work - 2/8/2011

These numbers do not reflect the people who WORK in Stockton. For those living and working in Stockton there is a maximum 20 minute commute, the roads are quiet and almost always trouble free. Riding your bicycle to work is a pleasure, there are no hills. Stockton is a dormitory town for people living in San Francisco. Why do you criticize a city, when, people think it is worth the 2-3 hours per day commute to San Francisco.

Yes, Stockton is a good place to move to... - 9/16/2010

While in the process of looking for a place to settle down (pre-retirement) in which we want more bang for our bucks, the city of Stockton never came up until my better half said "I want to be closer to my sister" (who lives 25 minutes away). I too was mis-informed about Stockton. Just like any place, it has it's ups and downs. Palo Alto is a nice area, but it also has East Palo Alto. I surprised myself because I like Stockton. We checked the area for almost two months, drove to the nice & bad neighborhoods before making our decision and moved here just two weeks ago, September 2010. Stockton is getting the "bum rap" because the media likes sensationalized stories. They should also report good things happening instead of reporting just the bad stuff. The neighborhood we are in is very quiet (even on weekends) and diverse. People are friendly and you see families walking/exercising around the neighborhood. SO YES, STOCKTON CA IS A GOOD PLACE TO MOVE TO.

dont come here - 8/15/2010

Yes, I must agree with you about Stockton, CA for I still live here do to the fact my mother lives with me and is a Kaiser Member. If it wasn't for that and the fact I work for her through IHSS we would be long gone!! So, far someone tried to break into this old house with a pocket knife and my good friend down the street stopped him. Then my neighbor across the street said she saw a couple trying to break into my car but because we let our dogs out for a potty break (around 2:00pm)it scared them off! Too many homeless keep pressuring you for money don't they know if we have money we would be long gone from here! The little change we have is just enough to get us through to the next pay period, some people have to use the cash in advance. It just isn't fair! My husband let our dogs out at 3:00am to go potty and a man sleeping under a tree next to our fence lifted up his head (spooked my husband) asked him for some spare change. Not too long ago a dead body was found next to the railroad tracks on the other side from our back yard. Every time we pick up the paper we saw people who walk around our area even in the day get robbed while walking their dogs or riding their bikes. It's the wild wild west better get your guns out! They cut back on their police do to the fact the state is going bankrupt can't get a budget because they pay all those politicans(mayors, commissioners, chief of police you name it) more than they worth or need. Especially those retirees. So, make friends with those around you and find things you can do to make life more interesting. So, far I am so bored living in this 2 bdrm house too scared to go out and mingle with the neighors for fear I might be a victim. Enjoy your life! I would love to ride my bike or walk my dogs.

Stockton - 5/22/2010

Stockton is actually ideally located on the river delta with a deep water port. It is intersected by two major freeways and the temperature is moderate. One and a half to San Francisco or the same in the other direction and you are in the Sierras. However.... Unfortunately we have a very high crime rate and high unemployment. On the positive side, if you know the areas to avoid and times to avoid them, you really are safe. Many nice areas of town and the delta waterways are great for fishing, boating and water skiing. Overall, you could live in a whole lot worse places. The crime I speak of is 99% of the time a victim or suspect who is involved in high risk activities like selling dope or being in a gang.In looking at many other cities across the county I see that many have similar issues.

High Crime Rate - 4/5/2010

I've lived in Stockton since 1962. On the upside, we have a plethora of trees. On the downside, we have one of the highest crime rates in the nation.

Educational Opportunities - 8/25/2009

Stockton has numerous public and private institutions of higher learning. I moved to this city in 1973 to attend the University of the Pacific, a premier private college located in the middle of the city. I have been a permanent resident since 1982. Stockton has a partnership with the California State University system and has a sateliite campus from CSU - Stanislaus, which is now offering Bachelor's, Master's and soon Ph.D program. The local community college, San Josquin Delta College's main campus is housed in the center of the city and has many satellite branches throughout San Joaquin County. There is a host of private vocational schools to prepare for a myriad of vocation ranging from administrative clerical, medical, construction, etc. All of this is within a city with less than 300,000 residents.
