Alaska is great - 8/10/2022

Alaska is a gorgeous state full of kind people, wonderful landscape, good food, great places, and good schools! I have lived in Anchorage since 2019 and it is the best place I have ever lived in. I'm originally from Denver and lived in around 26 states and 4 countries, and so far, Anchorage, Marseille, and Vail Colorado are my favorites! I have a happy family in Anchorage and it is just a great place to be overall! I love Alaska and never regret moving here.

Recreation in Alaska - 3/4/2015

I have lived in Alaska for forty years, and have found many exciting places to see and things to do. I prefer outdoor activities. If you like to hunt, camp, fish and hike there's nothing like it. Summertime brings twenty hours of daylight to enjoy what Alaska has to offer. From moose and bear hunting in western Alaska, to halibut and salmon fishing off the coastal waters of Prince William Sound. There are also many pristine lakes locally for great trout fishing. If hiking is your passion, there are many clearly marked trails throughout the state. Winter brings us extremely cold weather, but some world class skiing, and backcountry activities such as snowmobiling, snowshoeing, and trapping.

Like another country - 10/28/2014

Living in Alaska is like living in another country; one that is behind the times by more than 20 years, at least. The roads are bad; the government and police corrupt; the weather makes expensive while dumpy housing hard to maintain; medical specialists are rapacious in their greed and there are more specialists by far than there are family practice general physicians; businesses and laborers gouge everyone so most people do their own shoddy work or go without; there is almost no concept of customer service; and far too many citizens appear to be somewhat "special." The state has the highest rape rate in the country, has a high crime rate in general, and suffers from more than its share of serial killers. In Anchorage, people are generally unfriendly and lack interest in anyone outside their own families and inner-circles; and they are very quiet. They also have little to no code enforcement in residential neighborhoods so one or two neighbors can ruin the beauty and livability of an entire block, as well as lower the property-values of the homes sharing their blocks. In Alaska is there little to no competition, which is why all the poor quality and gouging takes place. Even the cable company, privately and locally owned, answers to no regulatory body except in one tiny tiny little town in the entire state! The scenery is breathtaking and for people who don't like other people, Alaska can be a great place to live, as long as they keep their expectations for most things low.

Alaska Wonderful Place to Live if You Can Handle W - 3/2/2013

I have lived in the Anchorage area for almost 30 years and can honestly say that it has a lot to offer, and for quality of life, is hard to beat. Low population, low crime, good job opportunities and schools, reasonable real estate, and stunning landscapes all add up for making it a great place to live -with one (big) caveat - you have to be be able to cope with the long winter - approximately October through April, with very dark days from November to February. If you can deal with that, it can be a truly wonderful place to live (and I was raised in Hawaii!!)

Living in Alaska - 7/9/2012

Alaska is an interesting place to live. The mountains are beautiful and there are a lot of outdoor activities for everyone. The constant daylight in the summer has been fun and quite enjoyable, however, the winters can be a bit long. The Anchorage/ Mat-Su area has faily mild climates due to ocean, and this year was our record snowfall. The cost of living has been quite a shock from the Midwest, but employment wages are comparable. Overall, it has been a good move, but can feel a bit isolating from family.

determination of climate - 9/8/2009

This is my first year living in Alaska. My husband wanted to try out a new state for a year or two. The wildlife and landscape is like no other state here in Alaska. I appreciate the state's beauty, however people who live here don't mind the cold and snow. No kidding! If you don't mind bitter cold, you may want to think about moving to Alaska because it has a lot to offer, especially if you're the adventurous type. However, refrain from moving here if you thrive on warmth. I am a person who loves the warm sun, and with that...we'll be moving this June to somewhere a bit warmer. :)

BEAUTIFUL.. but expect to pay for it.. - 5/8/2009

Housing costs/availability, food, utilities and price of gas are all higher than most any of the lower 48. (I have lived, traveled through have done research on and/or have friends living there)

The Alaskan Winter - 3/8/2009

The winter is long but tolerable. The climate is dry and the snow powdery. Low temperatures are not as brutal as they might be in a more humid climate. By March the days are long, sunny, and bright.

Wide open spaces - 11/19/2008

There is no state like Alaska. Recreation possibilities are endless although lifestyle and recreation vary drastically depending on which area you go. Your standards for scenery and air/water quality go way way up once you've lived in Alaska because Alaskans enjoy the best of these. But, distance from family and the need to fly nearly anytime one wants to leave the state cause lots of expense and time away from work. If you visit, plan on spending at least a month to take it all in.

Lots of outdoor activity and wilderness! - 11/1/2007

I've lived in Anchorage, Alaska since 1961. Alaska has lots of outdoor activities and space to enjoy them! Backpacking, camping, white-water rafting, skiing--we have it all! Drive 10 miles and you are in the wilderness. Amazing colors, beautiful sunsets, summer midnight sun! We still see moose and bear in town! I'm lucky to live in Alaska!!
