A little city that could... if it tried - 6/26/2008

I have lived in Bellflower for 35 of my 38 years of life. I have seen the city go through many changes over the years. As a child, I attended the public schools in Bellflower. To be honest, the school system in Bellflower used to be good! Now, Bellflower Unified School District spends almost $2000.00 less per pupil than the national average to educate a child. The school system needs a major overhaul and the teaching staff really could use more help from the community. As for our City Counsel, I feel that they are behind the times. They have made some improvements within the city, but the city counsel and the planning commission make it difficult for new businesses to come into our community. The majority of the larger downtown building sit empty, because of the high rents, and the regulations of the city counsel and the planning commission. Violent crime isn't really too much of a concern, but Bellflower has major issues with "Drugs". Bellflower has an unusual amount of apartments for a city of it's size. The majority of apartments accept section 8 or HUD housing. I am NOT going to say that there is anything wrong with anyone who is on section 8 or HUD, as I believe that anyone could be put in to circumstances that they might need assistance. What I will say is that if you drive down any of the streets with apartments, you will see the "Drug Dealers" standing out in front of the apartments.

Realistic view of Bellflower - 6/25/2008

I have lived in Bellflower for 35 years. My education K - 12 was in the Bellflower Unified School District. From my perspective, Bellflower is behind the times. Our city counsel does NOT have a realistic view for the future of our city. The city counsel and chamber of commerce are trying to revitalize the downtown area, but the majority of the large buildings are vacant, due to the high rents and the Ghetto attitude. Bellflower has an unusual amount of apartments for a city of it's size and the majority of the apartments welcome section 8. I am not going to say that everyone on section 8 is a problem, but if you drive down any of the streets that have apartments, you'll see the drug dealers standing around.
