A Great Place to Live, Except . . . - 6/21/2020

We have lived in and near Bothell for 20 years. The schools here are great, and if you’re college educated, the job market is great, too. We moved to the Pacific Northwest from Aridzona 30+ years ago, and though it can be gloomy here, the summers and falls, clean air, abundance of things to do, scenary, arts, restaurants, flowers!, great water, the ocean, and fresh fruits and vegetables more than make up for it. So why only 2 stars? This is a VERY liberal town and area. There simply is no diversity of thought. It’s oppressive. Everyone here thinks that you think exactly like they do, and there is open disdain for Christians, conservatives, and the Midwest. My wife takes our dog to the park every day, and usually gets hit with a barb like "those stupid conservatives". Even people in church will roll their eyes when speaking about people in the Midwest. We have learned to hold our tongues because we would have few friends if we didn’t. Taxes here are also high, and traffic is some of the worst in the US. Seattle is a beautiful town, right on Puget Sound. But these days it’s dirty and filled with homeless encampments and lots of drug use. We never go there anymore. I retire in a few years, and when we leave, we’re shaking the dust (or mud) from our feet.

Beautiful Place - 9/22/2017

I moved here 5 years ago to keep my career moving after a layoff in sunny Colorado, where I had lived for over 30 years. I was so afraid of the supposed gloominess that most people report. What I found was an amazingly beautiful place that I am thankful to be a part of. Yes, November through February is mostly cloudy and wet, but the trade-off is lush vegetation, gorgeous flowers, fresh air, and the Northwest climate...where it rarely gets much below 30 at night. The summers and fall are amazing. However, if what you want is lots of solar radiation...maybe another place would be more sutiable. Bothell is a clean, neat, attractive town with nice restaurants, plenty of jobs, and quick access to both ocean water and stunning mountains. It was a bit expensive I'll have to admit, but you don't have to live right in Bothell. There are outlying areas close by that are a bit more reasonable and still very nice. The taxes are high in comparison to the average, but not the worst by any stretch. I would recommend this place.

Seattle - 1/2/2012

Seattle is a nice place to live. The weather is usually semi gloomy, with really nice summers.

Quietude - 12/10/2010

This small town on the edge of the Seattle megaplex is a fairly quiet family oriented collection of bedroom neighborhoods. Life here is oriented around schools, churches and other organizations. Not really the place to walk around meeting people. However, it lies at the apex of an excellent road system and has many public transportation opportunities, allowing anyone with the need to do so go to where they must.

Bothell Washington - 12/3/2008

Nice, clean, friendly, low crime, easy access to Seattle, Everett and Eastside(Kirkland/Bellevue/Redmond). Great job opportunities with Boeing, Microsoft, telecoms, HP etc. Not seeing too much of the recession here except for recent layoffs at WaMu. Can't wait for more sun!

I love Bothell, partly because it's in King County. Northshore School District is the best district.

Nice place bad weather - 9/12/2007

I have lived in Bothell for 5 years. The upside is that people here are very nice. You have access to Seattle, although if you have to commute it is not great, because it can run you 45-60 minutes. The economy is vibrant with a lot of jobs. The downside is the weather of course. From July to October it is absolutely gorgeous. However, from November through February it is very gray and rainy. March - June is a mix between nice weather and rainy.

tough job market - 7/12/2006

Despite what the statistics may say, there are few full-time jobs for college graduates here. For example, when certified, qualified school teachers are cleaning houses for a dollar over minimum wage (no benefits, no health insurance) for two years, that's a problem economy. When certified, qualified computer programmers are doing in-store demos of everything from shampoo to pet food to crackers because those are the only jobs they can get, that's a problem economy.

It's Getting to Me--GREY! After 4 generations, we - 6/22/2006

Cost of living high, but, so what. People were distant, but, now they're simply rude and insincere. It's a city totally stuck on itself but unable to substantiate any true claims to fame other than it's previous "Best Places" recognitions. I'm almost 50 and a fourth generation Seattlite (family came from Scandinavia and Britain in late 19th Century). There are many good things about Seattle, but, #1 thing going against it now is: GREY! Used to be I could take it, and I've lived in Honolulu, Anchorage, NYC, San Francisco but most of my life in Seattle. It's soooooooo greeeeeeey! Family always said, "We left a cold, dark depressing place for another cold, dark depressing place." It's not rain that bothers me, it's the lack of definition. No shadows, no definable clouds (they're up there somewhere), no rain, no sun, just that eerie, bleak, "blues-inducing" grey. Sorry all you new comers, but it's not the rain that'll get you, it's the monotony of monochromoatic blah.

Bothell/Woodinville - 5/16/2006

This area is outside of Seattle, on the northeast end of Lake Washington. It is sometimes referred to as Northshore. Like Seattle, we have beautiful summers with long hours of daylight. The rest of the year is pretty grey. Bothell has several companies in two big business parks, Canyon Park and North Creek. Woodinville has several wineries and the Red Hook brewery. In the summer, Chateua Ste. Michelle winery has outdoor concerts on the lawn. Other than that, there is not much in the way of night life. Things close pretty early. Young couples would find the drive to Seattle worth it. The area is great for families - good school district, friendly people, nice parks. The Sammamish Trail connects into the Burke-Gillman Trail, which goes around Lake Washington. Bikers can jump on in either Woodinville or Bothell.
