Trashy, ugly and hostile place. - 3/30/2022

I moved here a couple months ago, and I can't wait to leave. There's so much trash everywhere, and random needles on the sidewalks. It's also really spread out, and hard to get around without a car. People seem extremely guarded and hardly anyone says hello to each other (I guess that's normal for being so close to Seattle). There's also nowhere you can go where you won't see other people. I went deep into the woods, trying to take a break from having to be around other people, and I still ran into folks every few minutes. The traffic is out of control. I don't understand why anyone would ever choose to live here, but a LOT of people do. It's like Fred Meyer and Taco Bell decided to start a community together.... Did I mention the trash? It's just a really ugly town, trash aside. If you like vast wastelands of parking lot next to boarded up, vacant storefronts and meth addicted homeless people, you'll love it.

Cost of Apartment - 2/25/2015

Bremerton, WA Apartment cost of Renting is to high here to live! why does it have to be so high for a small town. Its not Seattle or New York give me a break. Landlords are here to take your money and don't care if you have any money left over to pay any other bills or buy groceries. I say don't move to Bremerton unless you are rich! Or well off. You need a state and city that cost less to live in and you will have money to do something fun with in the month with. MOVE OUT OF BREMERTON!!!!!

Rent - 12/7/2014

Renting a Apartment in Bremerton, WA cost to much for Disable person like me I'm 45 years old my Husband 71 years old We pay $841 a month for low housing apartment on the east side of Bremerton, WA Where I live they say it goes by your income how can that be I'm on SSI and My Husband on SSI. I get $711 a month, so you see what they are doing! They are change people more rent then what they make, a month to live on to live here it take to income to live in this Apartment in Bremerton, WA When what people get on SSI their Rent should be only $374 a month to live here. So you see live in this town they take all your money here to live so if you are on SSI you need to live down South in a cheaper town, where SSI money goes farther in the month. Washington State is not a State for people on SSI.

Just a horrible place to live - 7/15/2011

I totally agree with some of the reviewers here. Bremerton is absolutely not a good place to be. We are a military family. We moved from California. All I had heard about Bremerton and the whole Kitsap County area was that people were "militantly polite" and the place was "just beautiful" so I was excited to get up here. I have been here for a little over a month, and I can tell you that I can back up what a lot of the reviewers have said. I lived in San Diego and the people there were not half as rude and impolite as the people I have encountered here. Yes, the scenery is absoultely breathtaking, but after looking at it for ten minutes, you find there is nothing of substance in this place. There is nothing to do, nowhere to go, and I feel absolutely sorry for all the people who reside here. It is great for retirement, but we are a young military family of three, and we expected a lot more, being as it is supposed to be a "navy town". I totally regret coming here, I cannot wait to leave, the racism is abundant, I cannot believe a place like this actually exists, and I am looking forward to us getting new orders. In the meantime, Hell is my new residence and it is called Bremerton.

On Bremerton - 4/9/2011

Bremerton still is not a great place to live. As a matter of fact, if you can avoid it, I would suggest it. It is dirty and unkempt. The Brem Revitalized review must have been written by someone working for the City in the tourism area. Actually, now that I see the "mayor" statement at the end lol. The only good things about this place is it is a short drive or ferry ride to Seattle - if you like that; Driving to the Olympic Mountains is a decent drive around a couple hours to some of the spots in the Eastern Olympics i.e. the areas of Lake Cushman, Staircase, Lilliwaup; and the hiking trails are beautiful out that way. But you have to drive a ways to find any decent trail or river. There is water here, but I wouldn't say it's a water sports haven. People do kayak out on the water..not sure what else. The water here is dirty (large shipyard), has no sand (small rocks, tons of broken clamshels...and lots of bird poo from the seagulls). The lakes are no different. Dirty, very small area of well used/travelled sand, and lots of ...bird pooo (geese or something on every lake here). I do remember on one of my explorations here seeing people scuba diving but I'm pretty sure it was for clams (out by Lilliwaup). I don't hear about scuba diving for the scenery out here. There is some art downtown (but not a "metropolis." I've never seen any "glorious" parks around here or trust me I'd be hanging out there once in a while to relax with a cup of Joe. It seems they are trying to revive Bremerton downtown, but the dirtiness of the rest of Bremerton, the drugs, and the lack of anything beautiful makes it ok. I don't see anything cool about a Mother's Day celebration at a conference center. All you can eat pig-out or not. Not at all cool. I was on my way home from the gym the other night and had to stop at the store and decided to stop at a Safeway I'd never been to. I was in there not two minutes and I could point out a handfull of druggies, two that were high, and a crazy person screaming at a wall in front of the store. There are too many dirty trashy people here. I can't wait to get the heck out of this place. There is absolutely nothing to do in Kitsap County or dirty Bremerton for that matter. Kitsap County blows. Going to Seattle eventually gets old, and who wants to drive 2+ hours every weekend to have something to do. Need a job and want to work on a ship? Guess that's one reason to come here.

Bremerton Revitalized - 11/29/2010

Bremerton hasn't always been a great place to live. It suffered years of neglect, influence of a Naval shipyard, and decline due to the economy. But with its perfect location to the mountains, water sports heaven, plus the diverse culture of Seattle just a ferry ride away, it has come back around to a great place to live. Within the last few years, the city has revitalized its downtown area into a wonderful shopping and art filled metropolis. The Admiral Theatre hosts some of the most incredible, world reknown entertainers out there and in a wonderful refurbished theatre. The harbor has been developed into a glorious park-like area with restaurants, coffee houses and an old naval ship open for tours. During the annual Blackberry Festival, there are numerous booths set up filled with creative arts and crafts from all over Washington. The first Friday of every month is dedicated to an artwalk with live entertainment on street corners and in shops. You'll also see our Mayor, Patty Lent, out and about meeting and greeting people. It's a great city and well worth a visit!

Amazed at how downtown Bremerton has developed! - 5/10/2010

Went to visit my hometown of Bremerton/Silverdale. Downtown Bremerton was a nice place to celebrate Mother's Day at (The conference center held an all-you-can-eat buffet). The weather was good, prompting many of the locals and Seattle visitors to mingle pleasurably. The negative feedback on this site is not at all current. A few years back, the city of Seattle promoted the idea of Bremerton, WA (1 hr ferry ride or 1 hr drive from Seattle, 35 mins to Tacoma)being a 'bed-room community'. It has brought increased attention from residents of other suburbs for relocation purposes and hence, the commercial sector of Bremerton is rapidly filling the rising demand for services commonly expected in a big city. For example, Starbucks, Subway, Cold Stone, and Howard Johnson have recently made downtown Bremerton home. Several independent art galleries are in business along the parallel street to the main road leading out from the ferry dock. For those needing punk pop culture cache to whet their appetite about Bremerton, take note there is a song called "Move to Bremerton" by MXPX which might convince you that Bremerton is 'cool' enough to visit and spend money in. I am amazed that downtown Bremerton is changing for the better and am happy to be a part of that history.

Bremerton, Washington - 1/22/2010

Bremerton, Washington, was once settled as a result of the Civil War. People that are familiar with the Grand Ole South recognize the features. The confederate camp and poorer english settled in Port Townsend and Bremerton. Conneticut brought a baron and his wife, probably the sailors that were whaling, and built the city. The Bremer estate is building a college today. The School of Engineering will be the next addition. The Navy is the biggest income earners, then the state. Washington is a difficult state for small businesses. Seattle the largest city. Much poorer than Minnesota.

Economy BS on here - 3/30/2008

Don't believe the doo do report on here that Bremerton is 5.14% less expensive to live in that the rest of the nation. That is pure raccon crap. Tacoma is waaaaayyyy cheaper to live in. They just like to dangle that BS in front of people looking for a new place to live so they can enjoy taking your money when you get here. Just like always... just cos some site manager puts it on a website doesn't mean it's accurate.

Crooked justice system - 3/30/2008

Well your reading about the pot smoking capital of the USA. They even have a pot smoking festival in Seattle once a yr right out on the streets. Bremerton has a reputation " Come here on vacation, leave on probation. Whether you did anything or not". Now i didn't make this up... i learned it after i moved here. The military personel get away with everything & anything from driving down main streets at 120 miles an hour to picking fights with the elderly. I was once told by a navy man, in his navy issue uniform driving his navy issue vehicle, when i asked him to move his vehicle from my assighned parking spot where i live, that i didn't know who i was talking to any i'd better shut my mouth. When i told he didn't know who he was talking to he said he'd be back to "take care of my a##". Well i called the navy base, got a report filled out but the guy came back & the property owner had to take care of him cos the police wouldn't even come over even though the man was tresspassing on private property and being beligerant about leaving. Most women, not the hoe's, but the rest won't date military men here cos they are disrespectful & if he beats the hell out of you the law won't do a daNN thing about it. Sexual offenders: Check it out for yourself online, they are rampant here the sexual offender map for kitsap county looks like pin cushion for military stratagey. Be careful where you live if you move here. I've been treated so poorly by local police the 3 times i've called them in the 9 yrs i've been stuck here that i just don't call them anymore. So move here at your own risk.

Kitsap Transit public bus system - 3/30/2008

Well the only way this buss system could be worse is if it didn't exsist at all. The busses run 1 X per hour except on routes were it's every 2 hrs or only 2 times per day. The bus drivers are snotty, insulent, judgmental, disrespectful, discontented people. They lash out at you, drive by people standing at the bus stop and when you ask the bus drivers for information about the route they are often sarcastic & give you false information or no information. For fun some of the drivers take sport in lurching the bus to try to knock the elderly & disabled off their feet before they can get seated. They will call you names & threaten you when you call them on things like trying to knock down a elderly person with the lurching trick. The handicapped equipment on the older busses doesn't even work 90% of the time. I find some of the drivers about 2% seem to make an effort. If you are dependant on public transportation this is absolutely NOT the city you need to be in. This buss system also serves Silverdale & Port Orchard Wa.

Dirty stuck up pig wallows - 3/30/2008

I've been here for 8 miserable yrs. I've lived in 7 different states & many cities. I have never encountered so many rude, stuck up people in my life. the housing economy is so poor that you can't find a decent place to live where you can have any peace and quiet. The apartment buildings (even the new ones) are so poorly built that you can hear your neighbors take a pee, floors creak, fire prevention can only be successful by not allowing even a match stick on the properties. The rent is successfully jacked up by the greedy property owners who like to stick it to the military families and that of course makes it difficult on the civilian people as well. I'm talking a DUMP will run you $650.00 a month with no amenities unless you count the dishwaher & locks on the doors as amenities. I have lived in 6 apt complexes in this city & the absolute worst ones for noise are Maple Manor Apts 2700 Maple st and Wellsley Apts (new name Pine Ridge Apts) 3232 Pine rd. The low income housing is practically non exsistant & what is avaialble ie was built in the 1930's & 1940's. I was denied an apt at the Manguson Wa Apts once the landlord saw my great grandson is black & i'm white. He called me white trash & my grandson a niger. That place is up for sale at this time & new owners may be taking possession at any moment. That manager has been fired. The weatherstone apts look great... but you can hear a nat sneeze in the next apt. It's a sad sorry lot of places to live. I'll be leaving soon i hope. BEWARE!

Comments from a former native Bremertonian. - 12/25/2007

Currently I live in Longview, WA, down the road a piece from Bremerton. However, I spent my first 25 years there and visit every 2-3 months on a regular basis. As far as rain and gray goes, as far as I am concerned, and having traveled I-5, it doesn't get any warmer or drier until you cross the border into California. As far as people go, I would say they are about as nice, and in some cases, nicer than the bigger cities. As far as the one comment I saw about trashy people goes - well, I have a few things to say. First, Bremerton is now, after many decades of blocked growth, fast becoming a bedroom destination community to Seattle, catering to mid-level professionals and up as secondary to the military population. Last time I actually lived in Bremerton was in 2004 and I was one of those trashy people that went to DSHS. I am here to say that my car was the worst in the whole parking lot, which was full of brand new, zippy little cars. I have no idea how they could afford it, because I sure could not. In the 70's, the town was full of rust buckets and rent was way cheaper; I remember seeing lots of places go for only a hundred or two. I didn't discover where all the trashy cars went that populated Bremerton in those years (and into the 80's) until I moved into the Longview/Kelso area and saw rusty cars, dented cars, patched cars, cars that barely moved, and above all, cars that looked to be more than 3 years old. You don't see those in Bremerton anymore. So, if there is any perception of trashiness, I would vote that it is a perception of general attitudes rather more than how spendy a person's level of living is. I know I can't afford to live back there at the present time, and I would like to because of family. If it wasn't for that, I would be happy to visit and live somewhere where I could dry out on a seasonal basis from the rain. That and money. So actually - I think Bremerton has improved greatly over the years. But - there still are not a whole lot of exciting things to do at night that I can tell except for hopping the boat to Seattle. Certainly not a lot to do at night for my two preschoolers. So although it is one of the good places in Washington to raise kids, I think it is quickly getting to be quite expensive for what it has to offer overall.

It's Ok but very under developed area - 6/3/2007

I lived in Bremerton for 3yrs (Military) and it has pro and cons. The pros about Bremerton is that it is a very small city, so traffic in the area is good at any time of the day. The job market is ok if you are looking for minimum wage jobs but if you are looking for something higher than that the market is very competitive including govt, city, and telemarketing jobs. You can start a business there due to "no" competition at all axcept for a nieghboring mall one city over in Silverdale. This place is ripe for the picking to start a business! The cons are that the school system is not good at all and very behind in academics. Buying a house in Bremerton is very overated and over priced. The nice houses are unaffordable compared to the wages you make. There used to be a downtown area but it's all abandoned and the closest shopping mall is in the next city. This area has a high crime rate for crimes against children. The niegherboring cities would be Silverdale which is nice and small but very expensive to live in. One thing that stuck out to me about Bremerton is that if you want to do family things (such as waterparks, amusement parks, zoo..ect) you have to travel very far there is really no family entertainment there and Seattle is about a 1 1/2 away and it is very congested and just has an overall appearence of bunched together shops, crime, crowds and dankness. You need to make above $60,000 just to be ok as far as providing for your family. We met a lot of nice people for the most part and I would visit again but not to live or retire. Also Canada is near and the scenery of Washington and it's trees are just beautiful.

Wasteland - 3/25/2007

I have never seen so many trashy people in one place in my life. The people aren't as friendly as most other places and there are a lot of just plain weird people. No wonder this state has the highest suicide rate. It rains all the time. This much rain surely can't be healthy. Driving around you see a lot of druggies and there are a lot homeless people for such a small population. Bremerton is hands down one of the worst cities i have ever lived in. I cannot wait to get out of this place.

Love the rain - 1/13/2007

Having come from a HOT climate in Australia 4 years ago, I must admit I love the rain and contrary to popular belief, it doesn't rain EVERY day, but you have to have a healthy love of the wet stuff if you want to live in Bremerton, because during the fall, winter months there are very few days where there isn't a dry day. It's not heavy driving rain though, more a constant drizzle, and if you stayed indoors because of the rain you'd never get anything done, so you get used to seeing people going about their daily business without even using an umbrella. Wouldn't change a thing though. Love Bremerton, love Washington and love the rain because it makes everything smell fresh and clean.
