All-around quality of life with increasing cool - 6/7/2019

Cary is up-and-coming “cool.” The downtown is revitalized and growing. The town takes urban planning very seriously. The home prices have definitely spiked in the last several years, but it seems they’re more in line now with the quality of life in the area, job market, and the high median income. The Raleigh and Cary greenways are unparalleled. The number of parks is head spinning. Arts and culture is cultivated. Cary is really a gem.

Nice place to live - 9/3/2017

I've lived in NY, CT, MA, and in Miami FL. Now here in Cary NC for the past 10 years. For what I want and need at this phase of my life, I really like it here! All the folks on this site who complain about how "boring" it is, what exactly were you looking for? By no stretch of the imagination does Cary and surrounding areas have all the amenities and hoopla as a large cosmopolitan city, such as NYC, Chicago, Miami, etc. If that is what you are looking for, then move to one of those large busy cities! My family moved here to get away from overcrowding, heavy traffic, long lines everywhere, noise, stress and high crime rates. Any area is what you make of it, and we are never at a loss for things to do in Cary, Raleigh and Durham. My kids are all adults now, and none have moved away from the area; they love everything it has to offer as well. I would have given 5 stars, but I have to say, the Wake County public school system is horrible, very poorly run, inept leadership and administration. I have gotten to know it both as a parent and as an employee, and unfortunately it is the worst of all the states I have ever lived in. Choose private schools for your kids if you move here.

Best place in Triangle - 4/26/2017

As a Real Estate Agent, I consider Cary the most central location in the Triangle, it basically takes you twenty minutes to get to Chapel Hill, Carrboro, Hillsborough, Apex, Holly Springs, Raleigh and even Southern Wake Forest. Its a lovely town that has grown quickly because of Research Triangle Park. There are still places to commune with nature though, like our amazing parks for example Bond Park, Umstead Park and of course the greenway trails that wind their way through this lovely town. Good places for shopping, dining and entertainment as well Put this one high on your list if you are looking to find a great place to live.

Boring, desolate suburb..worst mistake ever!!!! - 2/3/2017

Coming from bay area & having lived in ATL, thought this would be a great suburb minus the traffic for RTP jobs...software. Seeing great reviews, we took a leap...worst mistake ever!!!! Raleigh is a TOWN..not a city...hence, no zoo, no aquarium, no water park, no sports, etc. The suburbs with good schools are in Cary, Apex and Morrisville. Those areas have NO MALL except the closing Cary Towne Center and NO shopping expect for 2 Target shopping centers. To get to any big box retailer you will drive 20 miles+. Wake county is HUGE with an avg. drive time of 1 1/2 hrs to drive across so most drives to where you want to go are 30 min+. 64 people move to Wake County everyday....ALL from the Northeast(mostly NY) escaping the high cost of living and cold weather so there is non-stop demolition everywhere of condos and apts. However, with the lack of planning, there is nothing but housing..mostly 3 level patio homes without yards and apts. everywhere. To get a "home in the burbs" you need $500k+. All of the area is in the woods with the few parks here in the woods too. The closest water park is 25 miles away in Fuquay Varina and NO community pool or recreational area. There is one gymnastics place in our area and it's a joke in a commercial area garage . The Monkey Joe's in Cary closed up as did the MyGym and the Monkey Joes in Raleigh needs to be condemned. 1/2 of the schools in the area are year round which means you attend 9 wks and then off 3 wks ALL year long. The school assignments are constantly changing regardless of where you buy a house. Our middle school assignment changed in the first year from a 10 Greatschool school to a 7 in the old part of Cary. This place sucks and we cannot wait to move after less than a year. The good news is that if you are Indian, Morrisville is about 80% Indian with many rest. and shops. We are moving back to GA after spending a year asleep in this place. Hope this helps someone avoid what we went thru. Look at RTP on Googlemaps...few places in the woods and then look at all your main roads...NC HWY 55 and NC HWY 1613(Davis Dr) and NC HWY 54...zzzzzzzzzzzzzz

Cary, Raleigh and Apex, all suck - 4/20/2016

It's getting harder and harder to believe Forbes, sterling, CNN and etc choices so here let me help you. By the way, I know some would jump on defense. Use it as guidance, of the people who lives here..blop. These area sucks!!! nowhere to walk and socialize with new people, restaurants mojo and excitement does not exist, is the same everywhere. Service is fake and mediocre. The mothers in Cary and Apex with sweat pants even at the doctors office. They own the roads with their gigantic vehicles at their own speed and brag about education which also sucks, probably cuz they are so busy doing nothing productive, but to waste massive time at PTA lamest school system where "no child left behind" it's implied and kids go to school with others physical and mentally incapable, screaming crying and etc. Lunches stink and are despicable. And you better drive to Raleigh for some fun cuz Cary and Apex suburbs lacks all, but to eat some nasty dinner and go back to your sack. Ohhh wait they all go to Tonys Oyster bar ha ha. But then feel like crap and run to Raleigh, the only strip to have some lights "Glenwood" with lots of kids, teens .......ha sure let the culture shock start. Sure this is a multicultural great place to live if you literally do nothing. Not to mention that summer is brutal and 1 of the top with allergies, your vehicle, front porch, panties, outdoor furniture and NY strip steak would grill with a butter of pollen. No wonder why is growing on craft beer, cuz there is ZERO to do here. That's why they all go to church ha ha. I can keep going but supposed to be just a comment.

Don't forget about the beaches! - 10/14/2014

Cary, NC is a great place to live of course. I enjoy the museums and restaurants in the Cary/Raleigh NC area myself. Just want to add ---don't forget about our wonderful coastal areas. Wilmington NC has much to offer in the way of beaches, outdoors, restaurants, shopping and golf! For those wanting to relocate to the coast Wilmington has great choices for beach homes, luxury homes and golf communities. Come check it out, only 2 hours drive down I-40.

Additional Comments-RE: Replies to "Just My Honest - 3/5/2014

Also posted in RE section. To: Matthew and Tom-not sure if they are even your real names. Nevertheless, you both sound like the typical residents, whether new or native, that has not experienced beauty and quality of life-especially thinking that NC is great! Matthew-there was an earthquake/tremor in the year of 2011-research it! It was felt all-over as far as Philadelphia! And in regard to Hurricanes, there was one when I arrived late Sep in 2010 and it was an earthquake announced on the news the same the same year as the tremor. Flooding is definitely an issue. As for Tom, it seems as if the truth hurts-you were so anxious to log in and insult that you can't even spell! Lastly, you do not know if the person was going back to their hometown, etc, thus why they were moving! Use common sense and critical thinking! The weather is not great! I shouldn't expect much more by way of opinions from someone who likes NC or the South in general! The review and Mercedes were spot on! No where is utopia, but NC doesn't even come close.

Raliegh/Cary, NC - Best Places to Live - 1/29/2013

In response to Mercedes - posting of 10/16/12. Having been raised and lived in the northeast; living in Phoenix, Arizona, San Diego, CA, Dallas, TX and the Washington, DC metroplex areas, I would venture say, I can speak with an open mind with what you are saying. I do not find Raleigh to be lazy nor arrogant or rude. The area as well is a melting pot of various cultures and backgrounds. It is unfortunate how we view people and cultures. I am also well travelled, I know racism when I see, whether undercover or otherwise. I will state, this area is a more laidback than New York City. I was relocated here by my company, but have family all long the east coast to include North Carolina. We all have our own opinions, I wish you will in finding that next place to reside that fits your needs. I am happy to say, I have not experience any of the items you reference. I enjoy being in this area.

Raleigh is a terrible place to live - 10/16/2012

We got stuck here a few years ago due to a job promotion. The environment is so strange. I lived almost everywhere and I am well travelled. Raleigh, Durham, cary area culture is a very lazy, don't want to help, arrogant and rude environement and I come form NY city. At least they are fast and efficient. They are so slow mentally and physically here and just miserable people here. Attitude and know it all issues for everything. There is also a lot of racism here although it is not obvious you can see it. I feel like I have been pushed back to the 1920's here as far as culture, ignorance etc. I suggest you look someone where else. I know we have been top on the where to move list but I don't think they take the culture and people into consideration. Can't wait to move!

COST OF LIVING - 4/21/2012

Moved here from CA 2 years ago. and I thought CA was expensive. I received a pay reduction of 15% when I got to Cary becuase of the so-called cost of living diference. but what they dont' factor in is that food, and necessities are far more expensive in NC than CA. the only thing different here is the housing market and not everyone owns a house. The cost of living here is 6.5% above the national average. How does that account for a cost of living adjustment in the negative. The labor and rent laws are rediculous. Landlords and property management companies can raise your rent to whatever. The sky is the limint. Mine was just raised 15%. Something is serously wrong with this picture. As far as the labor laws go...absolutely ridiculous and unfair. Landscape companies can hire you as a salaried employee so when you work overtime you get HALF time and less the more hours you work which amounts to less than minimum wage most of the time. Just another law here in NC for employers to abuse. And trust me they do. This state is way behind the times and is not the least bit interested in doing whats fair for it's law abiding citizens. I would not recommend you move here unless they change their laws.

Just my honest opinion..... - 8/27/2011

I have read comments regarding how great Cary and Raleigh are; however, I disagree tremendously. Cary is very dull and the area is going down hill fast. The education is not great at all compared to other states. Wake County has a lot to improve on. Had I known that the county eliminated textbooks in the school budget, I would have not moved here. How can a student learn without a textbook to refer to one when needed? How can a Teacher effectively develop curriculum without a textbook? My child has not adapted to the block schedule either. Also, identity crime is very high in this area and yes, the housing may be affordable, but the food is priced way too high. What good is it to have a beautiful home and you are starved from eating mac n cheese all the time? I am not sure if many people know this, but NC is no. 9 with Seniors going hungry everyday-very sad! In general, many people come south to retire or to improve their quality of life, but even the elderly can't retire and relax because the cost of living is so high here! Also, the weather isn't that great. Tornadoes, flooding, hurricanes, earthquakes, too much to worry about every year for my taste. Please do your research and don't always fall for the stats. Sure, this is heaven if you do come from NY, NJ, or another costly crime ridden state on the east coast, west coast, etc., but even with this, the grass isn't always greener on the other side. This is still the South and I really don't see much progression-this is true for NC's sister state SC too. There are other parts of the US that are more beautiful and affordable. All the best to you if you still come here. I will be leaving soon.

Great place to live and work! - 1/8/2011

Cary has parks and walking trails and neighborhoods of every kind. We are conveniently located to Raleigh and RTP, and recent road projects have made commuting easier. Cary is well-kept and clean, very safe, and there are a lot of green and open spaces. There are many school choices, from local schools to magnet schools through Wake County. Overall, this is a great place to live, work and play.

Cary- nice - 1/4/2010

I have only been in Cary, NC a short time, but it is a nice town with lots of new shopping centers. You are restricted without cultural things to do being outside of a small city though compared to New York, Philadlephia, or other large city. I am moving again to be outside of a larger city with the possiblities of more to do culturally.
