Extreme growth has been good but very stressful - 2/12/2019

I've lived here since 2011. There are a lot of things I like about the city, but extreme growth has made it exhausting to live here. BIGGEST PROS: - Brand new stores, restaurants, and entertainment venues everywhere - Busy downtown square with many shops, restaurants, music venues - Several large parks with forested and non-forested trails - Youthful energy and vitality - Large weekly community market and annual festivals BIGGEST CONS: - Constant road accidents, red-light-running, and major gridlock - 1+ hr commutes to Fort Worth, Dallas, and/or McKinney - The entire town is under construction which is constantly changing - Poor air quality in the summer - Seems like lots of anxiety, depression, alcoholism, and substance abuse

Nice town but growing very fast - 6/3/2018

We moved here from the midwest in 2014. After 4 years, we still love the area; however, it has grown so much and so fast that the traffic is such that we prefer to stay home on the weekends. The property taxes have gone thru the roof since we arrived (on a side note, so has our property value). If the property taxes keep increasing in this manner, we may not be able to retire here, which was our intent.

Great Fun - 8/9/2008

Denton has a lot going on. With two state universities and a community college, it is a mix of personalities. We have fantastic festivals, museums and cultural events, university and high-school sports (and professional sports very near by in Dallas and Fort Worth), outdoor recreation, and dining. I don't imagine there is a personality that couldn't find something of interest within 20 minutes drive of anywhere in Denton.

Surviving the heat - 8/9/2008

Denton has mild winters and unpredictable springs. The summers can be long and hot. Temperatures usually stay the mid to upper 90s from June through early October, but we hit the 100s most years for several days. August can be a bear. The autumns are very nice, though. Because of the climate and topography, it is a grass-lands area. Oaks do well here, but it is not much of a green area. Lawns have a tough time making it through the summers without browning.

Denton Climate - 7/3/2008

I just moved to Texas 2 months ago, so this won't be the most objective review of their climate. Denton's weather is like living in an EZ Bake oven with a vacuum cleaner in reverse. That said, the lightening storms are spectacular but if you aren't used to them (like me) they are very scary. The hail storms would be great for a major league team to practice with as they are about baseball size and reconfigure any vehicle left with out shelter. But no worries, there are lots of body shops willing to take your money to make your car look like new again. Tornado season this year brought more tornados than ever before (I suspect with global warming that trend will continue). Thus, if your house is in the path of one of these spinning vortex's out for a night on the town, you can kiss it good by along with all your charished memories. Then again, you'll probably find it all in a giant 52-card pick up like game fashion strewn in a 1 mile radius of your once charished home. Because they seem to hit at night, you'll be safely in la-la land if it hits your neighborhood. On a good note, the storms I have watched have actually NOT hit the Denton, Texas region (more often Dallas, Plano, and these areas). We do seem to be in the storms path but according to my neighbor who has lived in the area for 30 years, Denton seems to have a get out of jail free card, because they get to see the action without ending up in the slammer. Summer lasts for five months here (42% of the year) but decided to grace us early this year (2008) for an extended stay. Yipee! As for the other seasons I've hear they are quite nice and the ice storms of winter make for great slip-n-slide bumper car opportunities to match the dents your car got from the hail storms. Coming from San Luis Obispo, California and Amherst, New York, Denton, Texas is the perfect book end of my US climate experience.

A Great Place to Live - 5/12/2007

Having lived in Denton since 1988 I have seen is grow from about 65,000 to around 100,000 today. The city has managed its growth well and has improved the quality of services without increasing taxes substantially. I enjoy the quality of the parks particularly the dog park. The growth in the surrounding nonincorporated area is affecting the density and the traffic. Traffic congestion is affecting the entire region particularly if one must commute into Dallas or Fort Worth to work.

Charming Texas Town - 6/22/2006

Denton has a unique small town atmosphere despite it's six figure population. The city has two 4 year universities and a thriving cultural scene. There are numerous festivals and musical events. The town square is a must see. The numerous parks located throughout the city are well kept and present opportunities for recreation or relaxation. Home prices are low and various housing options are available.

Denton: its good and bad - 4/29/2006

We lived in Denton for about 3 years. It is a nice size about 100,000 or so. There is a lot of urban sprawl, which most of TX has. The cost of living is really low. Houses can be just down right dirt cheap. It is a college town, which is nice too. There are several good colleges in the area. Along with some Tech schools. Good places to eat are Chop Sticks. This is near the college, and is a local hang out for the college students, but is really the best place in town to eat. Other then that you can find small mexican places that are very good and very cheap. The big place to live is at the Providence. This is a new neighborhood that has pools, lakes and lots of parks, but expect to pay out of the nose for taxes. Lots of foreclosures in this area due to the overwhelming high heat bills (ours was 620.00 in one month! Not a payment carry over from the last month, this is just one month. Everyone has this to deal with in this area) People are very friendly and nice. The schools are good. Coming from the North it was hard to get use to the very hot summers. The land is very flat, and there are not a lot of trees. Watch out for those fire ants, and they are everywhere! Cockroaches can be a problem too. In the north they only come around if you are very dirt, here it can be a problem for anyone. We just couldn't adjust to the way of life, and missed the snow. But, for some this is really a place one could really like. I do miss several things; you cannot get good mexican food like this in the north or east. Central Market is a chain food store, somewhat like Whole Foods, but with much more variety. The bakery there is to die for. If you don't mind the heat (tar roads can have a liquid state I read on a joke somewhere, falls true) hate snow, and like new things, you will really like it here.

The cost of living in Denton is pretty reasonable. Great medical care, and 2 universities make it good place to live.

If you like small towns and are willing to seek out small townn-ness in a sea of strip malls and freeways and you can accept the lame with the beautiful, the mediocre with the quaint, then Denton is the place for you.
