Florence versus San Diego for retirement. - 7/20/2020

I'd like to retire to Florence from Southern California. San Diego is too crowded with dirty water from Mexico. It's also too expensive in coastal California and even inland. From the pics and talking to people Florence is very nice (green). Is the quality of tap water good? Is there good fresh fish? San Diego is fished out. Boats are going down to Mexico in paid, designated spots for San Diego restaurants. Beat-up Betty

I have concerns about the bear and cougar sitings Has anyone actually been attacked or killed? Should that stop me from moving to Florence?

Wonderful City - 8/6/2017

We vacationed here every year for 15 years. Finally we bought a home within walking distance to the ocean three months ago. We love it. There is rain and fog, but the sun does come out tomorrow. :-) When it does come out and the sky is blue, which is more often than people have said. It's beyond beautiful. The town is clean, people are friendly, and we love it. We will be traveling a lot in our RV, but will more than happy to return to this wonderful little town. There is so much to see and do and the beauty is amazing.

Awesome - 4/20/2017

We fell in love with Florence on a visit last year, and we bought our house a month later. The town is so friendly and beautiful. Yes, there is plenty of rain - but there is so much to do and see, and there are lots of sunny days too.

Not So Great!! - 1/14/2017

I moved here a year ago, and was shocked to see so many homeless begging on street corners just like in Portland... sad! I grew up in Eugene/Springfield so Florence was a place to play, and have fun with family, and friends. Back then there were no homeless people here...now they are everywhere. I just wasn't expecting the decline in the area. I also feel that folks in Florence are not all that friendly. So, unless you have money, and already know people here....this isn't the place I would move to again. I mean....might as well live in a larger city with more shopping, and less cost if this is what it is like in small town Oregon!!!

OK except for the rain and good ole boys - 1/8/2017

Moved here to get away from the severe winters in Bend only to discover I suffer from SAD and the day after day of gloomy weather practically drove me crazy. Healthcare is difficult to obtain other than the walk-in clinic, I had to get a PCP in Eugene. Be sure to spend some time here before making any permanent commitment.

You'd better be a fan of clouds and rain to live h - 11/26/2016

Florence rates high in liveability because it has warm winters and no snow. Check the inches of rain and number of sunny days- that will tell it all. You'd better be a fan of gloom and doom. Yes it has all that wonderful fishing, hiking and outdoorsy stuff, but it also has weeks of nonstop rain and no sun. If you like to hibernate then perhaps you can get through all that. I've lived here 22 years and the weather is very trying.

Thinking about moving to Florence - 11/20/2012

Great Place to Live - 11/8/2009

This is a great little town. My parents have lived here since 1971, and they wouldnt live anywhere else. I want to retire there someday. The town is very friendly. People actually talk to you there. The town remindes me of Santa Barbara, very clean and new looking. There was only about 2,000 people in 1971, and now the town has over 10,000. With that many people moving there, it must tell you something. Only thing is there is a lot of rain which is what makes it beautiful. A wonderful school system for children and a nice place to raise children. I say yes its a go. Thumbs up here.

Great Place To Retire - 8/7/2009

Upon retirement, my wife and I wanted to move to a coastal community with a population under 30,000, average yearly temperature between 40 to 70 degrees, with minimal or no snow, within an hour of a larger city for shopping if necessary, and having reasonable community services like medical, public safety, basic shopping, and restaurants. Florence fits that bill almost perfectly. We enjoy a home overlooking the ocean, walk on the beach 5-6 days a week, and weather that fits our temperature range. Florence has shown up on several "best places to retire" lists. What we do not find in Florence, an hour away we can usually find in Eugene.
