Great Place for Families and College Kids!! - 9/6/2022

I have lived in Greensboro for almost 30 years. Moved here in the 8th grade from Long Beach California. We literally fell in love with this great state and Greensboro in particular is so dear to my heart. I have grown up here and raised my kids here. Went to college here and had the time of MY LIFE!!! If you are young and love all different types of people... Greensboro is the place! Its a total college and family town. We have somewhere tons of colleges in the area and thats is what we are known for (and our beautiful parks). UNCG, Greensboro College, Guilford College is a Quaker writing school world renowned, Guilford Community College, A&T Aggie Pride is a thing yall! Plenty of college kids and plenty of cheap places to rent that wont be found on zillow. This town is quite safe... if you are a female just look out for yourself in the clubs is all I can say... The weather is pretty great.. a beautiful 4 seasons of which none of them last very long. It will get into the 90s during the summer but we have mountain lakes to cool off in or rivers at every turn. The winters are mild here and only occasionally do we see single digit temperatures. Oak Ridge, Kernersville, Mebane, Colfax, Rural Hall are all great smaller areas within ten minutes of town. Ive made life long friends in this town and there is always something to do. The city is great about hosting events and our downtown is simply adorable. With a huge city center park and a splash pad for the summer. Everywhere is dog friendly downtown. Boxcar arcade bar is so fun... roof top bars are a thing here too and outdoor seating at Natty Greene's next to the train tracks is my favorite little spot to enjoy a beer and brunch! Summer solstice here is a beautiful celebration and they do tea lantern lightings in the summer ...just fun stuff for kids everywhere. The childrens museum in Greensboro and Winston are unmatched yall! We have rednecks, liberals, black people, Asians, Lumbee Indians this place is smack dad in the middle of the east coast and we draw people from everywhere. There are plenty of crazies but that is anywhere you go. We keep Greensboro clean and Green but they are building up everywhere. Plenty of jobs and Charlotte is just an hour drive south. Raleigh 45/50 minutes to the East and Asheville 2.5 hours to the West. The mountains and beach are 2 to 3 hours away. One downside to living here is getting older... There is not much for the singles here unless you are young. The people like to hibernate in the winter too so it can get boring!

Sure..come to Greensboro - 1/19/2022

Born and raised here. Yes some crime like everywhere else, but overall, I'm not afraid to be out at night. You might like some areas right outside of the city.. Jamestown, Whitsett, Kernersville. Summerfield and Oak Ridge are kinda pricey. I think its a fine place for a family and not too far from Raleigh or Charlotte.

Moving from Austin- is Greensboro right for us? - 12/4/2021

Can no longer afford the cost of living in Austin, Tx. Searching for a medium size town to move to in North Carolina. Family of 2 middle aged adults, one college age son and 1 retired parent. We’re hoping to find a friendly, affordable, liberal town. We don’t drink so the bar lifestyle is not for us, but we do enjoy arts and entertainment. We are not interested in being neighbors to super conservative, conspiracy minded people. Is Greensboro a good place for us?

Not a Good Place to Live - 8/16/2021

My fiancé and I moved here for her job. While we immediately found the city quite dull, we decided to give it a year or two to see if things improved. The more we got to know Greensboro, the worse it became. It’s boring and depressing. People are unfriendly and have a chip on their shoulder. There is very little to do and it’s hard to make friends. It definitely feels like a Twilight Zone or like you’ve stepped back in time by 15 years. Sure, housing is affordable but you need to ask yourself if it’s really worth it to buy a big house if it means living in this city…

Greensblows!!! - 8/2/2021

This place is horrible, very racist the blacks here hate white people, and if you are not liberal they will treat you real bad, I lived here for 10 years, and the majority of people black and or Hispanic are racists. If you are patriotic white heterosexual, and looking for a good place to raise your family this is not it. Also working for a local hospital it was just as bad, promoting based on race not on merits, if you are white patriotic and try to love are respect everyone this is not the place. This was also voted 31 most violent place to live in America with a high murder rate. Do yourself a favor if you get here keep driving !

Greensblows!!! - 7/28/2021

I have lived here for 10 years and absolutely hate it, there is about an even split of whites and blacks, let tell you this place is very racist. If you are White Patriotic, or conservative they will hate you here, I was badly harassed by the Black female population at a hospital I worked at, when I complained to management they just ignored me. This place is very Racist against white people unless your gay trans or super liberal, very unwelcoming people and place. Also they will gossip about you so bad that you won't be able to a job anywhere if they decide that they don't like you. I guess this is the sign of the times, revenge is how Greensboro love everyone, take it from me a person who served in Iraq and Afghanistan multiple tours. What do they say when you say you don't like it or have had a bad experience, it is like that everywhere or leave.

Move elsewhere - 5/7/2021

After living here since 2012 we are officially moving. The crime is ridiculous (safer than only 6% of cities in the US) and we no longer feel safe. We live in the nicest part of GSO 27410 zip code but if you go 10 minutes outside this bubble, it’s disgusting. Population is 47% white & 45% black and if you’re white, prepared to be hated on as if we don’t “belong” in this city. Staff at stores are rude everywhere, no one is polite around here anymore and it’s a shame since so many places downtown are trying to be up and coming. Don’t move here. There’s also riots downtown & white neighborhoods were being targeted last summer.

Leaves a lot to be desired - 3/6/2021

Lived here from 1995 till 2010, and moved to Burlington afterward. Over time, Greensboro has become a place of High drug activity and crime (violence and theft), due to lack of police presence esp in 27405 and 27401, and portions of 27403 / 27406 zip codes. Bad roads, dangerous highways. Potholes on market st, gate city blvd and friendly Avenue that will blow ur tires. I-40 /85 business is a total nightmare to drive on. With 5 highways signed onto it. Why is 85 business still signed, when theres 85 bypass? Get rid of business 85. Also get rid of 220, already theres 73. Has possibly the worst drivers of any NC city. Will do 25-30+ over the speed limit or cut u off / tailgate u /run u off the road.

Greensboro has been good to me over time! - 1/18/2021

I agree with what some of the folks have said wholeheartedly and then others they just did not meet the right people or attend events where you can meet these people. One such place Greensboro Chamber of Commerce or Jaycee sponsored events. I have been here since 1992, formerly living in Charlotte, NC. Greensboro's night life has dwindled since my time, but it still has some major scenery going on downtown with the Cone Denim Entertainment(Booked by House of Blues)among many others. I am in the event business and yes, a graduate of the University North Carolina, Greensboro. This area has been great to me and my business, with half of my clientele being black and the other half white, I see no skin color here. I do agree that the educated prosper here, but I lived here before getting my degree as well and did just fine! There are good and bad that come along with every city, but my thoughts here are that Greensboro has been treated unfairly by some of these people and they should remember this, Life is what you make of it and sometimes it take a little motivation to get to where you need to be.

LOVE Greensboro!!!!! - 9/14/2020

I have lived in Greensboro for 8 years. I have lived in Ohio, NJ, NY, FL, AR and We just love it here! Since I move a lot I realize it take 3 years for it to feel like home. I love the parks, the greenery, downtown and the farms outside of town. There is no other place I have been to that people just like to talk. Wide mixture of cultures and races but for the most part people get along. Schools are just okay. I think the Administration changes the curriculum too much and too much testing. There are people who do t get along but for the most part in the area I live in (about 6 miles from downtown) everyone is courteous and friendly. I have moved to three different neighborhoods and each time the neighbors came to introduce themselves to our family. Have to say we do t want to move again

Twilight Zone - 3/13/2020

Staying in greensboro is hell on earth. The city still have condemned apartments up in running. The people are rude and different. Racism is at its finest here. Did I mention the medical staff? The black person who is looking to prosper here will face consistent battles, most will have you perplexed. Make sure your knuckle game is tight fyi. Can't wait till I graduate. Im leaving this Twilight zone

This place actually does suck - 9/10/2019

So I wrote a review 3 months ago about this place and now im about to move away. Looking back, I would say that I was awful generous about this place. This town just plain out sucks and here are a few reasons why: 1) Not much of a working class. Most of the people in this town are either retired, a student, or on welfare. The people working jobs usually make minimum wage. There are not very many good paying jobs in this place. Its quite depressing interacting with people who got it rough or people who just dont give a crap. Greensboro is way too far behind in terms of keeping up with the modern times and no employers are coming here. 2) Very crappy infrastructure. Old roads, roads that are too small to hold all the SUVs and trucks, outdated speed limit signs, turn lanes that point to nowhere, no public buses in some spots, etc. Not sure if its the lack of tax dollars or what, but everything feels very old. 3) Speaking of old, the housing here are terrible. Many of the apartments here are very cheap but most dont even have a washer dryer and most landlords dont give a crap. Anything decent is overpriced for what the average income is here, it just makes no sense at all. Houses start at 200k for garbage made right out of home depot and are located out in the middle of nowhere. 4) Food here is awful. Not sure why people are raving but its mostly burgers, cheap chinese and crappy italian. This places doesnt even have a Publix and the new one they are building is closer to high point which is about 30 min. Not to mention the service here is terrible. Nobody gives a crap about their job and you have to beg people to try to do anything. 5) Boring as hell and not much to do here. Went to the civil rights museum and that was cool but that was the only interesting thing here. Science museum is nothing special and minor league sports suck. Colleges are boring even though A&T is okay but not for me. Went to the bog garden once and that was neat but pretty forgettable. Country park was so so, cool history but very sleepy place. Thats really all there is to do in Greensboro for fun, nothing here is remotely exciting. 6) Last point since I dont want to ramble forever but 2 things worth mentioning. First is that Moses Cone is one of the worst hospitals on the planet. At moses cone I waited 8 hours just to be sent home with pills. 8 hours at an ER is pathetic. Their doctors like everything else here could careless about you. Went to see a doctor at Lebauer and that was million times better but its laughable that Moses Cone gets all these high remarks yet its one of the worst Medical Systems I been to in my life and I been to at least a dozen. Second thing is that UNCG sucks balls. Place is a ghost town all the time and I feel bad for anyone who wastes money to go there. Seems like a commuter college that is barely a step above community college. I went to a college like that as an undergrad and it seems awful. Lots of money so you can go work in retail anyway. Overall dont move to Greensboro. This place sucks for all ages. Not sure who on earth likes being here but this place is super backwards. Its not much different than the rest of the south and outside of cost of living, which doesnt equal good quality of life, I dont see what redeeming qualities this place has.

This place kind of sucks - 6/22/2019

Lived here about a year and cant wait to get out. Too many reasons why but just a few that I can name are: 1) Its got a poor economy and low quality of life. Alot of companies are leaving the triad area since skilled workers dont want to come here. There is not really much going on in terms of life here. All there is here are a bunch of chain restaurants, churches and big box stores all sprawled out that take a half an hour to drive to. The crappy apartments cost 800-1000 bucks for a 2 bedroom and anything decent your paying the same prices as you would in the Raleigh area or literally any other mid major city. Outside of downtown, there is nowhere to really walk around since whoever was the urban planer of this town was on drugs and didnt know how to build a town correctly. 2) The things that people brag about Greensboro just suck. The parks suck since they are desolate with tons of hills that are difficult to walk on. Cone health is one of the worse hospital systems I ever dealt with. UNCG is a mediocre school as well as all the overpriced colleges here. Harris Tetter is overpriced and so is Fresh Market. People here are not as friendly as people claim or are just really odd people. 3) Not much to do thats close by or see in other towns. Winston Salem and High Point are half an hour away but they are literally clones of Greensboro. The Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill area is 1 - 1 1/2 hours away along with Charlotte but its just more of the same except slightly nicer and with better colleges (and im not a college student so to me its irrelevant). The state of North Carolina is a big labyrinth that all looks and feels exactly the same, its kind of terrible on the mind. 4) A hopeless town with no real future sadly. Lots of parts of town are run down and wont ever be cleaned up. I found it hilarious reading about how downtown is being gentrified but I fail to see whats being cleaned up since it still looks pretty run down. As I mentioned early, companies are moving out of here and nothing in the way of any new good paying jobs or any way to stimulate the economy is showing up. Sometimes they build a new store or how they are building a new performing arts center and it gets so overhyped when in any modern city its not really a big deal. I moved here since my job lets me work from home and ended up renting some cheap apartment but I wouldnt recommend this place in any universe. Between the lack of anything really interesting to do, the off putting people, the overall dread in the vibe of the town, and how inconvenient it is to travel around town, I dont see it worth saving a few bucks to live here. I didnt like North Carolina in general since so much of it is exactly like Greensboro but yeah, Id pass if your somewhat of a functioning person and think that its worth moving here. Just kind of a depressing place to be.

Compton of North Carolina - 5/1/2018

If you ever go here you’ll see the resemblance to Compton. I almost got mugged twice while I was there, a horible bus system, herrasment from locals (if you are white), and a police force that you never see.

Pros and Cons - 11/19/2014

I am going to give you a real view of Greensboro, NC. Many of the reviews on here claim that the city is either good or bad, but there are aspects of both. I have lived in Greensboro now for 10 years. I have lived up North and down South. So I am not bias one way or the other. Pros of living in Greensboro: Healthcare - The healthcare here is excellent. I have met and been treated by some of the best medical professionals that I have seen in my life. Colleges and Universities -I have researched many of the schools here in Greensboro and have found their programs to be affordable and credible. Cost of living - If you are looking for somewhere to live, where you can get a nice place on the low end, then this is the place for you. Dining - The city has numerous places to treat your taste buds to. Chain and local restaurants offer great dishes. Cons of living in Greensboro: Jobs - if you don't have a good paying job lined up; this may not be the place for you. Low paying service jobs that will not keep up with your monthly bills. Job postings are numerous, but when you apply for a job; a month latter you will see that same posting again unfilled. Employers waste your time and gas calling you in for interviews; then lie and say they will call you back. People - This is from my personal point-of-view and I cannot speak for others on this point. This also ties into the job situation. First of all, racism can be found all around the world, but as a black male I get some uneasy looks if I ask a Caucasian manager if they are hiring. I have lived in many major cities and small towns, but I have never seen a place with so many unfriendly people. There are exceptions, but in my opinion this is not a city of people who care for their fellow neighbors. Artist - This is not the place for you if you are any type of artist. Go some where else. Crime - Greensboro does have its unfortunate situations at times; just as any other large size city would have. Recreation - I'm sorry, but I don't want to spend 2 to 3 hours driving to the mountains or the beach. I want my recreational activities in my city. Events - Greensboro is a great city to have monthly events and festivals, but for some reason officials do not utilize Greensboro like they should. Here is what I think if you are looking to move to Greensboro. If you have a good paying job lined up, want to be close to college and universities, want a quiet place to live, and decent shopping and eating; then move to Greensboro. Even better for retirees. If you are young, a artist, looking for a city with a great job market with better pay and advancement opp., looking for a non-stop night life, or a place to mingle with individuals in your community, a city that host multiple events every year; then don't move to Greensboro, NC.

Excellent City - 11/1/2014

If you are thinking Greensboro, NC for settlement, you must have researched very well. The best attraction in my view is the NICE people who live here. How caring they are is simply refreshing, and gives a new meaning to humanity. I have lived here for 3+ yrs now, before which I lived in Houston, Detroit, Gastonia/Charlotte. I am so happy about my decision to relocate to Greensboro with my family of 8. In my opinion , Greensboro is perfect for 2 kinds of people. Those who want to raise young family will have a wonderful mix of very good to excellent public schools both in city limit and suburbs. You also have prestigious options for well established private schools from daycare to highschool to college. The area also offers fair shopping choices. Big name North Carolina Universitis, like Duke, UNC, High Pint, Wake Forst, Davidson, etc are within 1 to 1.15 hours drive. The other kind are those who want to retire into a laid back quiet life. Tons of options for luxurious townhomes in nice neighborhoods to multiacre affordable single family homes. There is no crowd here, a lot of space to maneuver , renovated roads, and state- of- the- art library systems. The weather is near pefect with a mouthful taste of all four seasons coupled with ample walking/exercising venues. You can not beat the fair cost of living here specially those who are looking to relocate from east, west, and southeast coasts. Downtown Greensboro is changing for the better at an alarming pace, Highpoint and Winston-Salem are 20-30 minutes away. The Metrostatistical area is dense enough and a usual attraction for mass activities. We may need a major league sport team soon. Hope it is helpful. Cheers.

Thinking of moving to Greensboro, NC - 7/29/2014

Not a review. Looking for answers. I am 72 y/o single woman living in central NY state is thinking of moving to Greensboro, NC in a year or two. I would like honest (hopefully more positive than negative) regarding living in Greensboro. My first attraction was for Boone, NC, but upon reading about Boone, it sounds expensive. I am retired, do not work, have fixed income. Living in central NY continues to be expensive; hoping to find something that will be economically attractive and friendly toward retired people. Thank you. Judy

A place that you wil love to call home! - 3/25/2014

Nestled in the heart of NC is an area known as the Piedmont Triad which includes the Greensboro metropolitan area. Situated along the North to South major interstate of I-85 and the East to West interstate of I-40 means that you have easy commutes to and from all of the other NC cities, as well as the beaches and the mountains. Imagine living in a place where you have all of the amenities of the city such as cultural, recreational, educational, healthcare, and employment opportunities; while being only 1-1/2 hours to the ski slopes or just over 3 hours to the Atlantic Ocean's beautiful beaches. Come see all that Greensboro has to offer!
