Live free or die...trying. - 6/1/2021

Live free or die...trying. Cute town with very little violent crime but the cost of living is ridiculous for what you get! Forget ever owning a home unless you are willing to pay around $300,000 for a decent place. Even if you do find a good price it is probably already bought by someone willing to pay cash or bid tens of thousands of dollars above the asking price. Rent just keeps going up and now average for a 2 bedroom is between $1350- $2000 a month for nothing special (no perks) . Also very hard to find housing that will take pets. Job market is a joke with mostly fast food and minimum wage jobs so don't expect COL to match what you are paying. There are no taxes but NH sucks the money out of you in other ways. How do people survive you may ask? Welfare, food stamps, and income based housing for a large percentage, the other group has been here forever so had houses when the market didn't inflate to what it is now. Also very very little diversity and for jobs its not what you know but who you know unless you have a job that there is a desperate need.

Pros and Cons of Keene, NH - 10/16/2008

Here is a quick run down of the pros and cons of Keene, NH from a native. Pros -Small City feel with quaint downtown and a generally safe area. -For its small size there is a decent amount of culture here -Plenty of outdoor activities -Good place to raise kids -2 hours to Boston, Seacoast; 4 hours to NYC -Good (though pricy) school system -Great location for families and older folks -No Sales or Income Taxes Cons -Very high property taxes -Even with the relative culture, it is still pretty sleepy -Lack of economic opportunites often forces young people to move away -New England winters (unless you are a skier, which would make this a pro) -Many "yankee" attitudes - often seen as unfriendly until you get to know people.
